I don't think it matters also because the oil vicosities would have changed by now. As long as it is within normal environmental operating temps (ex. not below -20F) you should be OK to mix any normal engine oil.
 
I figure any oil is better that not having enough. I've never heard of anybody exploding from mixing different brand engine oils. I would go for it. Your engine will thank you.

what type oil do people use/recommend?

I don't think normal oil and synthetic oil mix. I don't think they break down, so I think they will work together. Just don't think they mix. Could be real off, no working experience with it. Don't you love wives tales?

Castrol sells Synthetic/Dino mix as a product. Forget it's name.
 
Yeah. Castol Syntec Blend. "Added protection for frequent short trips."
