Pick up another transfercase for the fj62. Last rebuild lasted 2 months before the oil slinger broke off and destroyed the gears. Before the rebuild and hopefully last one is it that important to leave on? Heard some didnt have them. Think it was on the fj60's. i would go nuts if it breaks again. Couple of picks. Some of the carnage and some of the new gear box I picked up. Thanks

why would you entertain leaving this part off?

the gears get lubricated / cooled by the gear oil....the gear oil gets where it needs to by the part in question.

Oil..slinger...

If Toyota put it there, leave it on.

Be very careful with re-assembly. Not saying you did it wrong in the past, just be careful.

Thanks for the replys. Entertain? Lots of oem parts are put on vehicles with ill reflects thats all. Heck my turbo subaru has many that was deleted from year to year. Just didnt want it to brake again.

The Subaru probably revs to twice the RPM and goes twice as fast if not more than a Landcruiser of this era ever will.

The parts were designed to work. That's why we all still have ~30 year old vehicles to play with :)

My boss picks fun at the fact my Landcruiser is so old and doesn't have all those fancy electronic controls. I don't think he knows what these things are capable of. In ANY mechanical condition these will outrun a modern vehicle on the trail :) Even if mine got 8mpg, stumbled, and drooled on itself I would still love my Landcruiser

I suspect you could leave it off. Depending on how you drive, though, it might shorten the life of your 'box,
perhaps by a lot.

The question we can't answer, though, is was it a fix for something you don't do (using a PTO, say)
or something you DO do (driving on the freeway at 70 mph).

what destroyed the slinger in the first place? how's the gear alignment? if the slinger comes into contact with an immovable object while rotating, it won';t like it. I'd check for proper thrust clearance of the idler cluster and proper gear alignment betwixt the input/idler and then the idler/output cluster to make certain there wasn't any interference with the slinger. double check for proper thrust washer position and thickness on the front half of the idler assy in the case...hth

I am a newbie and am resealing my 78 FJ 40 2F. My question regards the oil slinger in the timing cover. It appears that when the slinger in placed on the crank, it will be pushed inward past the woodruff key in the shaft, when the timing cover is installed. If this occurs, the slinger will freewheel. Any suggestions? Thanks
