If you are not loosing any coolant, not likely, but to be safe do a bubble test, warm up the engine, open the overflow bottle but do not pull the hose out of the fluid, have someone tach up and hold (or operate the throttle bell crank by hand) the motor at 2500 rpm, watch the overflow bottle for bubbles to come out the hose from the radiator, no bubbles no problem for now. if you have opened the radiator cap recently bubbles can be normal, air being purged from the system,

Also the one blown HG I was around you could smell fuel/exhaust that was pushed into coolant, it was wife driven badly blown though came in on a tow truck.

Here is blackstones web site, where you get a sample kit for free,

Blackstone Laboratories

You could double your oil change interval with no problem. the 1FZ is very easy on oil having no major shear area's or heavily loaded parts, it holds a lot of oil and they tend to consume oil leading to make up oil which keeps up the additive package. I would not have any qualms going 5K miles on any quality dino oil and good filter, synthetic even further.

Raven Tai, your comfortable with filter replacement at 10k miles? Are you changing oil as well? Or just adding a qt?

Well, the bubble test was a negative. I think I'll PM it next summer just to play it safe. Thanks for the help and the link.

yes, after opening them up after 10K they look just fine, I think the filter can go just as long as the oil can, I changed the oil when I pulled the sample,

Cmadness I had always planned on doign a PM HG, If it is going to go might as well do it at at a time of your choosing, but I never got to it, 100K now and it has never blown,

Thanks, this is my first time around with Mobil one. Should I change any earlier?
Also, when are you expecting to change your oil, every 10 k miles from now on?

Just pick a schedule and stick to it. I use 5k miles because I can remember it. I would not change any earlier the first time.

I plan on going 10K again and from now on but I crept up on it over a long time, I agree with cruiser drew you should start with 5K, I did that for a long time, easy to remember also, change around 155K. 160K, 165K etc.

ok. Thanks.

Hey Raven, how did you cut the oil filter open without totally destroying it? I'd like to take a look at mine next time just for kicks.
Thanks!

oil filter cutter, cost about $30, works similar to a pipe cutter.

Raven, sense moving to Mobil one syn. I've seen a little better gas mileage. I have about 2k miles on sense the oil change and I see no oil usage. But it looks a little darker than normal. Guess I'll look at changing the oil sooner than later.

change early because of the color? color is our only home measure of oil state but it is not a very good one, you can change it early if you want, no harm of course, but barring any strange operating conditions your oil is fine.

there is some evidence that synthetic oil will slightly improve gas millage, I think it is mainly due to typical synthetic having a lower viscosity than the typical mineral oil of the same nominal weight. the difference is very small,

I was reading the FAQ's. You guys had this same conversation many times, I'm sure.

I was under the impression that the reason your oil is blacker than normal is because the mobil 1 is cleaning the sludge buildup. My first oil change it was black before 2k miles. On my second oil change it was still pretty clean at 5k when I changed it.

I agree.
The FAQ section on oil is a good read. Raven Tai knows what is up though. How many guys do you know
that cut a filter open?

It is required by law in my trade to cut open used oil filters used on piston engines and examine them for metal chips, might as well treat my own vehicle to the same standard.

Whats your address?????????:D
