Oil Filter

Something I do know. If an oil filter does not have a good "flow", than this can cause a drop in oil pressure. You can stuff what ever you want in a filter to "grab" junk, but if the oil cannot go back into the system, well then, you have bad flow. The smaller the "mesh" the more it will grab, but the slower it will flow. If the bad filter is on, and you raced the engine, does the pressure come back up? If it does, that is because it is being forced = bad flow.

I agree on Fram, but my issue with Fram is that they look chintzy! Mud is full of Fram police. Any time a Fram filter shows up in a pic, someone mantions it!

I have one of those mini filters on my FJ40, but after reading many oil filter threads, I don't think I'd ever install another one. I have become convinced that large OEM is best, and large [any reputable brand that is not a Fram] is second best.

Update: I ordered the large filter today at the local Toyota parts counter. They weren't sure if the large one was going to get sent or not though. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. They said it's been a while since anyone requested it.

Yes. They use a modified Fram numbering system (Fram's filters suck, but their numbering system seems almost universal.) The Fram number is PH8A. The Wally World number is something very similar. Hastings filters are also excellent filters if you can find them.
 
I've been using the Wix 51773, which is an interchange with the 51515 but with 1/2 quart more capacity. I think it's a tractor filter.

Works well, but is a little tall and I have to tie the plug wires out of the way, so I'll prolly go back to stock size after I use up the stock.

And Mel keeps my filters happy while they're waiting to be used.

I got my big oem filter today at the local parts counter for $12. I figure my 60 is worth the best parts especially if it's only going to cost $4 more than the junk filter. So now I just need to figure out oil. Sounds like Rotella is popular. I'll have to do some forum searching to see what the consesus is.

Your going to get alot of opinions on which oil to use!!! Also there is alot of good info out threads debating the subjuct, I run Mobil 1 full synth in both the rigs.

And the makers of Amsoil filters is...... WIX.

Amsoil just likes to charge a lot more (like double in some cases) for the same product.

Save your money, get a Wix or a Napa Gold (Wix in a different box).

I used a FRAM filter on my 01 dodge cummins. The filter media came apart and clogged a piston oiler destoying the engine:mad: Fram sucks.
 
many folks have cut apart fram filters to find the filter media is nothing more than a super cheap celluose paper fiber resembling cardboard - and the media is cheaply glued together which can come apart under major engine load and high oil temps. also many of the filter elements in Fram filters are much smaller than the leading filters such as the WIX and Purolator filters.

i'll see if i can dig up some pics.

basically Fram is a NO NO. most of us already know that.

many higher quality filter brands use a metal end plate, and a much stronger filter media.

of all the filters ive seen disected, Purolator Pure One and WIX had the best construction, best anti-drain back valve, and largest quantity of filter media in the filter body.

I believe Purolator's Pure One has the highest quality construction and best filtration
 
Do you not get Kralinator filters in the U.S.? I have used them and Puroilator for a long time now.

So do most people think WIX is better than the big Toyota filter? The Toyota one was only $12. Not too bad.
 
Anyone have pics of the Toy filter cut apart?

Lots of people keep saying that. But I have yet to see one shread of proof.

One of these days, I'll start cutting filters apart..
