I have a 71 fj40. 1 f motor was just rebuilt, had it running for a few minutes with no oil pressure, I ended up replacing the oil pump. Ran the motor for about a minute with an oil pressure sensor gauge on it, it reflected about 50psi. I reinstalled the gauges valve cover. Started it up today to set the timing. It ran for about a minute blew the seal on the oil filter. It does not have a double seal on the filter. My next thought is either plugged return line or bad oil pressure relief valve. Is there anything else I should check or any other potential problems that would have caused the oil filter blowout?

You should have pulled the plugs and used the starter to whirl it over until it built oil pressure - then put the plugs in and start it.

Maybe the filter is bad. 50 psi shouldn't blow gaskets, I have a spin on. Cold mine will do 80 psi on the direct read gauge I use.

I have a 71 fj40.
So your oil pressure relief valve is on the outside of the block, I'd take that off and apart and clean it up and check that the plunger moves easily. Also make sure your oil lines are attached in the right place and not backwards.

On the 71, oil pressure relief has nothing to do with the filter, always a fixed amount to the filter. In the early cartridge type, the return pipe had fixed size holes to regulate oil volume. On the newer spin on, I think the inlet was had a reduced size to limit oil to the filter.
Sounds like maybe lines reversed to the filter.
