Apologies for the length but skip to the bolded line and the paragraph below it for an idea of what im asking.

A few weeks back i discovered my crank pulley bolt had fallen off. I didn't realize this until i was driving home one day and i my battery charge light came on along with loss of power steering. by the time i got home coolant was boiling out of the overflow hose along with what seemed ot be oil leaking from the passengers side.

i was, at the time, baffled until i disovered the bolt had fallen and the pulley was angled outwards on the bottom, being held in place by the tension of the belts.

so what caused this? a series of rare/intermittent hard starts im assuming eventually torqued the pulley bolt off. how long had it been off? im not so sure but thinking back i do recall a strange rattling noise after a hard start about 1 week before the story above.

towed it to the shop and they checked for pully key play, which there was some. so as a bit of a fix it was jbwelded into place with the pulley reinstalled. drove it for a week to work/school and heard what sounded like a broken timing chain guide (the loose rattle). Guide had broken on me in the past so i was familiar with the sound.

Upon inspection it turns out the guides were fine and after several days in the shop it was determined that there was some bottom end/crank damage. The strange issue is that the engine sounds fine when its cold, but as soon as it warms up it makes the same sound as a broken guided chain. Considering the cost of getting that repaired and the possibility that it might need more repairs as a result down the line, i think im gonna just spend a little more and spring for a new engine.

First, I'd like to ask if anyone has ever seen or heard of this issue (the red line above) and second... i've started looking for potential longblocks to swap in. I'm sticking with the 22RE and prefer reliability over hp. As of yet it looks like 22reperformance.com (putneys) is looking like the best option as DOA and LCE are way out of my budget. If anyone could point me to a list of other vendors etc it would help.

Its my daily driver and im still driving it but have been told the noise is the result of oil pressure issues so it could/will give at any time in the near future as oil pressure drops. Would love to get some input as i'll be making my move in the very near future. Dont want to blow the bottom end and not get my core back. Could shoot some video for the audio if necessary of the engine going from cold state to warm as well if that helps but to my ears it simply sounds like a broken guide when its warm. There is also, a strange vibration i can feel in the car that comes and goes when the engine is idling, not a shake but a vibration.

I hadnt posted in a while. I guess i sure made up for it.

I'm wondering if having the pulley fall out allowed the pump spline cog to walk it's way out of the oil pump, so you ran with no oil pressure for a bit. This would also allow the bottom chain sprocket to drift forward, not sure what it would have done, but something could be chewed up, including the tensioner.

Replacing the entire engine seems kinda drastic to me. Why not just pull off the timing cover and take a peek?

It's been my experience that having the crank pulley bolt fall out was caused by not torqueing the bolt properly. Not saying that's what happened in this case, but "hard starts" doesn't seem plausible to me.

If you had the crank key come loose then there is really nothing to keep the engine in proper time. There is still some tension on the chain, but it might have skiped a tooth or two.

I would pull the timing cover as well and see what's going on. If your crank is scored, then I would just get a new engine.

As far as a new 22repreformance engine, check out my thread on one of there products

i know that the chain is tight, thats been checked and the tensioner is fine as well. the hard starts had been happening on and off for over a year.

I guess I got a bit lazy in getting it looked at but it would happen so randomly that i would forget to have it inspected. in any case, you could be right, who knows. the bolt could have been improperly torqued at some point. I've only had the car for 4 years.

snobdds: i saw your thread earlier, will probably give em a call today to get more info from them.

part of the reason im interested in a new engine is because i dont really plan on selling the car, or buying a new one. I would rather invest in this one and keep it for several more years. Because it will most likely remain a daily driver and occasional trail visitor my priority is reliability by not cutting corners and going for the lowest bidding rebuilder. also im looking forward to having a legitimate excuse to actually get a new motor, i would never do this with a normally functioning engine still in the car.

My thinking is that if i just get a used engine from the junkyard or a randomly rebuilt 22RE that i'll be dealing with various issues again in the near future. I've got very little experience with working on cars, nor do i have the tools to try and learn, and dont know any close friends who are any better off so I cant put myself in a situation that would require tinkering or adjusting here and ther.

I'd love to be in a position to just learn by doing most things myself but this is my DD, i live in LA and i dont even have a garage I can work out of. Anything beyond a flat tire = me calling AAA.
