I just got back from checking out the bending & welding operation and I have to say that I'm very pleased with the work. The bending is being completed on a press using a die so the accuracy/repeatability is excellent. All of the bases should be complete around the middle of next week.

I just got the word that all of the bases are done, I'll be picking them up in the morning.

Man, what a mess. I wish I knew before, what I know now. I found out after all of the parts were formed that they could use something called die rubber for an additional $0.25 per part, which would prevent the die from causing the marks that you see on the previous pictures up above. I've never had parts formed on a die before, so I just didn't know any better. I've spent the entire weekend polishing the marks out of the parts before I take them to be tumbled. I'll wrap up the remaining 36 pieces tomorrow and then take them down to be tumbled on Tuesday.

My garage is a disaster, everything is covered in aluminum dust...

I finished polishing all of the bases this afternoon and dropped them off to be tumbled. I should have them back sometime Wednesday so that I can take them to be anodized before I leave town over the weekend. I will also check in with the extrusion company to see if I can find out where they are in the process.

I'll let you guys know when I have more information on that.

I just got off of the phone with the extrusion company and they are expecting the custom die to be delivered just before new years. The expected delivery for the extrusion is January 15th, but they thought I might receive it as early as the 8th.

I got them back from tumbling this afternoon. I plan to drop them off for anodize tomorrow morning, but I need to talk to them to see if I have enough to meet the minimum lot charge requirement. If not, I will wait until I'm having the clamp halves anodized and do them all at once.

Unfortunately today brought some bad news for me. I'll be leaving to go to work on Monday morning, but I am supposed to be home by New Years. The only good thing about it is that it is coming at a time where it will not impact any of the progress on getting these done.

Here's the tumbled parts. Enjoy!

BTW, don't let the pics fool you. The parts don't look very smooth, but they are actually very smooth. They finished them with a pretty fine media.

After re-reading my last post, I just thought I should clarify that only the bases will be done around the first of January. Sorry for any confusion.

As a "side project" (nominally I'm a product manager for software) I've been designing for hard goods manufacturing at work lately and have also found there are a ton of details like this that you don't learn 'til you've been through it a few times.

I won't presume to tell you how to do your job at all, but if you've got any interest (and time) you may want to read up on Lean manufacturing processes: one of the aspects is reducing batch sizes - although the cost can be higher per-unit, it lets you iterate through the manufacturing process faster resulting in less rework (waste) as the design is optimized. Its fascinating stuff, even though it can be extremely hard to put into practice. I've been reading a lot on it lately, trying to figure out how to apply it in non-manufacturing domains.

Thanks again for your work on this. Looking forward to replacing the zip tie currently holding the extinguisher in =)

Happy New Year Everyone. I just picked up the bases from anodizing a few minutes ago, and they came out awesome.

I received all of the mounting bases back from laser marking tonight and I am very pleased with the results. I hope you guys are as happy with them as I am.

Thanks SSCR, that's my favorite part too!

I received word today that the custom extrusion is done and on its way from Utah to Colorado.

I visited the machine shop yesterday afternoon and took a look at the extrusion. I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out. Due to their backlog of work, it doesn't appear that they'll be able to get started on the machining until the end of next week though. Once it is done, the parts will be tumbled and anodized which looks like it will take another week or two after machining. Right now I'm thinking that by the time we are able to assemble, package, and ship it will be somewhere around the middle to the end of February. I have decided that once we have all of the manufacturing done, the $69 price will no longer be available so if you are planning on ordering, make sure you get it done before we start to ship them.

Here's a picture I took of the extrusion yesterday.

I wanted to give you guys an update and let you know that the machine shop is working on machining the clamps. I had planned on visiting the shop on Friday to shoot some video of the process, but I ended up getting called out of town for work. They are going to ship the first two complete parts to me so that I can assemble and test a complete mount before they machine the spring pockets in the rest of the parts. I want to make sure that they are just right, otherwise, the mounts won't be able to hold the extinguisher as tightly as it could have. Even though I'm out of town, we are still on track to possibly ship before the end of the month. That's my goal anyway. The only wildcard is going to be how much of a backlog the anodizers have when we drop off the clamp halves.

As before, just a friendly reminder that the $69 price will only be available until I start shipping the completed units.

Thanks again to everyone for their patience. I know it's been a long wait, and I'm sure you are all just as anxious as I am to get your hands on one.

Wait what? When did this price drop, how did I miss this? $69 shipped?
