I have an aftermarket rear camera that is mounted above my license plate.

Good to know. Would love to install this setup on mine some day. OEM swing looks alot cleaner than the other options ive seen.

The OE tire carrier has a high coolness factor but I can't help but see it as a damage multiplier. One good hit in the rear from a van/truck or into a tree and you could damage the tailgate, lift gate and rear quarter panel. The tire carrier's stopper is the tailgate.

That’s what insurance is for, ha.
In all seriousness, I’ve stopped worrying about things like that. My 100 is 16 years old now! One good hit in the rear from a truck is likely to ‘total’ a vehicle this old anyway. If that happens I’ll cut the back end off and turn it into a crew cab!
Or buy a 200!

For me, it's my older cars/trucks I worry about. They are worth way more than blue book value due to mods. Or perhaps, I should say, they cost way more to replace than blue book.

I hear ya, unfortunately that’s just the way it is. For me though, I’d rather use and mod the truck the way I really want and hope no one else destroys it.

Also, just for sake of conversation, I’ve seen plenty of photos where aftermarket bumper mounted tire carriers have cause the exact damage you speak of. Maybe not the quarter panel but heaps of damage non the less.

Sure, but given the exact same circumstances, a Slee, 4x4labs, Dissent tire carrier, etc will fare better than OEM, don't you think? My Slee carrier is slightly tweaked from a drop off and the weight of the back half of the vehicle hit the spare tire. Because of the strength of the spindle, the 2" heavy wall square tubing of the carrier and then a 2" gap between the carrier and the body, there was virtually no damage. The same drop off with the OEM carrier could've possibly totaled it?

Oh I'm sure you're right. Those bumpers are stout!
I've now run 3 4x4 labs rear bumpers, 60, 80 and now my 100....But I still love my oem carrier. For every day use it's perfect. I do think that the Dissent rear is pretty awesome with his latch system.

My wife's 80 has a 4x4 Labs rear bumper. The truck took a hit to the spare tire and it bent the swing arm, tire carrier arm and the arm was driven into both tail gates, wiping them out. The bumper was not damaged.

I guess anything hanging off the back has the potential to be a damage multiplier.

^^^ Agreed, different swing outs designs provide varied levels of protection. I'd say this design would provide better protection than the 4x4labs design. The swingout is latched down to the bumper and a safety pin prevents the swingout from hitting the tailgate.

In the case of my wife's truck the latch did not let go. The arm bent. It was a low-speed impact as well.

Dude what is that latch? I like it. Is that an old slee design, or did you modify it?

New Slee. On an LX570 I believe.

I have both Slee and 4x4labs bumpers as well. The Slee swingout is a lot more substantial... 3" square tubing and 2 vertical tubes vs 2" square tubing and one vertical tube. Also, with the 4x4labs, the latch attaches to both swing outs (not the lower bumper) and does nothing to resist twisting.

Agreed. Both Slee and 4x4 labs in my driveway with similar attributes. I also have a Kaymar mixed in there that kinda splits the difference.
