I have a problem with two valves on a 22RE.

Just had the head resurfaced and valves ground, installed a new cam and going back together. I thought.:bang:

The #2 and #3 exhaust valves cannot be adjusted, with the adjustment screwed backed all the way out, the clearance between the rocker arm and valve stem is .009/.010. All other valves adjusted fine to cold specs. And yes, the cam shaft was in the correct position for each valve adjustment, and the rocker arm cam rider was not on a lobe or approaching one. I checked that more times than I cussed.:censor:

I have taken all the exhaust valves out, and they all measure the same height. All springs, caps and clips are on properly. All cam and head bolts were torqued to specs. All rocker arms look as close to each other in appearance as the eye can tell. I can put a straight edge across the stem top of the four exhaust valves and #2 and #3 valve stems are a few thousands higher than #1 and #4.

I suspect the valve grinding resulted the valve being “taller” than stock. You can see in the photos that the rocker arm is resting on the valve stem.

So to the question: What is the proper way to get some adjustment back to the valves, take a file to the valve stem or take the file to the rocker arm where it is above the valve stem???

Thanks,
Jerry D.

Interesting.... Neither is an ideal solution, but if it were mine I'd go after the valve stem as it would be easier to get to... Cover everything so you don't get filings into the oil... Just make sure you smooth it up nice before you stick it back together....

Could you put a spacer (shim) between the rocker assembly and the head?

A hard spacer mind you, not something easily malleable.

there are oil passages you would screw up, and because its only a couple that are off it would mess with the adjustment of the other valves.

I would call the guy and ask how much he had taken of of the valves and the head to get it goin. sounds like somethin funky happened.

I would be more concerned with what caused this problem and not whats the easiest thing to take metal off to make it fit.

Taking a look at the old cam shaft, the #3 exhaust valve lobe was well worn. Not sure if the fact the rocker arm could not be adjusted prior to the head work. Perhaps the head has been re-worked previously. See photos.

Thanks for the replies, and I know neither is the best correction. Ideally buying a new head would be the best solution. But as this is not a daily driver, and I'm sure it will see a few more years of fun, I’m going to dress down the valve stem a few thousands and go with that. The owner just doesn’t have the money to replace the head or the time to quibble with a shop.
