Recently purchased an abused, beat up 1993 4x4 22RE, manual, 211,XXX. $400 for the truck with water in the oil. So far I have pulled the engine and everything but the block has been replaced on the inside. New hoses, Clutch, bearings, radiator, all tune up pieces, alternator, and about $50 in random missing bolts. When we started the tear down we quickly found out that ALL of the mount bolts were missing ( 4 up front and the tranny bolts). Everything went back together fine, but took alot longer than expected, no leaks except a very minor leak from a freeze plug. We drained out almost 9 quarts of water and oil before the rebuild due to an intake and head gasket leak. Had some very major idling problems when we first got it running and about 13.5mpg. I did pull some codes and did a ton of searching on here but still can't get it just right. I checked the resistance on my AFM and the only problem was on the temp circuit which was one of my codes. Wondering if that would cause my mileage to be low? Also, there seems to be a miss or sputter at idle but idles at 850 to 900 rpm... ideas? My other two codes were a knock sensor which I figured was from the initial crank up and a vacuum switching valve which I replaced. Lastly, I noticed tonight on the interstate that I had some noise in fourth gear only and noticed it when on a slight up hill.... again any ideas? The truck seem to have plenty of power and pickup, at least more than my 3.slow did, but the mileage seems to be about the same as my old 4 runner. Any ideas would be helpful and I am sorry I don't have any pictures, I left my stinking camera 2 hours away at my father in laws house. I will post them soon! Thanks and sorry for the length.:bang:

the 13.5 mileage on a stock rig is poor.
i would clear and recheck codes and go from there.
the AFM being a turd could cause the problems, a nasty exhaust leak near the o2 sensor could cause it, a crappy o2 could cause it.
we really need better info.

Roger. I pulled three codes but the check engine light has not come on since. I had code 24, 43, and 52. I am running 32x10.50 BFG muds on stock wheels but I still think there is a problem. We set the timing, with the jumper on diagnostic box to 5 deg BTDC but when we pulled the wires the idle jumped up. Once I got the Vacuum leaks fixed I was able to get the idle more stable but there is still a miss and it seems to be running rough, with poor fuel economy. I couldnt tell if the noise in 4th gear was coming from the tranny or the engine, it sounded a little "bad Bearing" like but we changed all of those. Hope this is better, sorry for the confusion.
