On to fender flares...

Island style fender flares that is... Abel won't let me be a small cat now that my rig is built so I need to protect it. I h8trees sooooo...

Step 1 was to fill in the side marker light holes. Thes were in pretty rough shape. Had to be hammered back into shape a bit.

Step 2 was to cut 2 1/2" sqaure 1/4" wall tubing to tie into the roll cage mounts. The front I cut the nuts off the bottom and put some 7/16" bolts in from the bottom with nuts welded on inside, the rear I retained the stock roll bar mount hardware to secure the tubing down to the wheel well. 4" 3/8 bolts to go through the cage mounts, square tubing and body to the flare. Is that clear? I will have to add another pick or 2 I think.

Heres a before pic and a pick of the front roll cage mount hardware I was talking about. One thing I have found is that when the nut is on the inside its always easier to take apart later on if its not covered in mud...

Bring on the 2x2x1/4" angle iron.

The first pic is a guide I layed out on top of my bench to help guide me through the bends. I found a bucket with the same radius as the body and traced it then used the angle marks on my speed square to figure out the angles.

The first bend I never cut into the upper leg and it bent at a tighter radius at the heal of the angle iron than at the outer part of the leg which makes the lower leg not lay totally flat. This would have given a fair bit of arc to the whole thing in the end so I started cutting into the upper leg a bit to achieve a more even and tighter bend.

Last few. I have cut it off at the back of the gas cap recess but have flipped the angle upside down. I need to get a pic though.

My one regret which I may still change is that I didn't weld the bolt heads to the angle iron, not the nuts. It will all be skinned in so they won't get dirty but it would be nicer to have the bolts sticking out to go into the holes for one person mounting if you know what mean.

This has been a great start of the year for building Rigs keep up the great work guys build them taller and tougher.

Well its been a while since I put up any progress reports... Heres the "flares" or tree sliders, whatever you want to call them finished. They work really well, its so nice to just steer into trees and kick back end around.

Done for now. Still need gussets and another bar up top to protect the rad. I'm toying with the idea of spreading the hoop 1 inch...

that looks really good.... nicely done...

No stinger but I think I'll notch the sides of the hood and add a bar across over the engine. Also thinking of a bar across above the cowl.

yeah that's the one i meant, a stringer across to both sides at the hinges. Check your rims also and see where your valves sit, mine need to be re-drilled, relocated because of interference from the beadlocks.

oh i thought you meant stinger. I have been thinking about the valve...

ahem, stringers run fore and aft, don't make me pull athwartships outta my thesaurus...:flipoff2:

looks good mark, I'm guessing I screwed the pooch long enough that you don't need those w/s hinges anymore?

Give me a shout if you head up this way dan, my house is being invaded by a bunch of drunken broads, so I'm being temporarily evicted...

Ahem, ahem... My vehicle, as well as Mr.Flyinglow's spends more time on-shore than in the ocean, and he's not building a hull-less boat:flipoff2: so i'm going to opt for the much more approriate term of "stringer" being used in a mechanical/architectural application from my old "statics & dynamics" classes refering to a horizontal member connecting/supporting two points! And Mr.Thesaurus would prove you right, but NOT correct for this application!! :hillbilly: Mmmm...beer for breakfast... And yeah i'll call you if i head up that way.
End of hijack, more pics Mark!
