Non VVti LC vs. VVTi LC?

Greetings 100 Series LC Community,

I am a long time Landcruiser admirer and use to own a FJ40 and a FJ60. Regretfully, I sold them 10 years ago when I moved over seas for work projects.

I just returned and looking to start my love affair with the LC again. This time I'm heart set on a 100 Series LC and debating whether to go with a 2004/2005 or a 2006/2007.

I test drove a 2004 with 225K miles and 2006 with 160K miles and I honestly could not tell the difference in power delivery during acceleration. In fact, I felt that the 2006 was more sluggish than the 2004 during acceleration from zero! This is making me reconsidering a 2004/2005 instead of 2006/2007 as the later is more pricey.

Could I have just test drove a poor conditioned 2006? I'm also not a big fan of the AHC feature on the 2006/2007 as I don't see the use for it on the road or trails. Would like to hear from the community on their experience, thanks!
 
If you’re going for super simple, any UZ motor is not the right choice anyways.
It’s all relative. The 2uz is the most reliable modern engine of our day, it’s relatively simple for a modern engine, and if its not simple, then why not at least get the most simple version of it at least

You got proof of how its harder on oil? Or how metal is better than plastic? The million mile Tundras were garbage plastic VVTi UZs built in the USA.

You also threw some dipstick comments in that are irrelevant to the engine. The A750F is about as bullet proof as it gets. Just a different fluid exchange procedure.

I don’t mean to call any variant of the uz engine series garbage, that’s blasphemy. But it’s clear when the cost cutting started. Vvti is notoriously harder on engine oil, vvti uz engines are still great engines. New age Toyota to me is post 2006 ish. Basically URFE engines are new age, not nearly as good and smooth as rhe UZ . I mean it runs 0w20 for Christ sakes, not my main reasoning but I mean cmon. 4.0 is new age garbage compared to the 3.4 5vzfe, I’d prefer the 4.0 over the actual new age garbage that we call the 3.5 in the Tacoma though

And it’s a fact that early UZ engines without vvti are easier to work on as far as timing belts go and various other things. And no secondary air pump, not a huge deal but still a deal. Do I need to dig up the car care nuts video and timestamps to clarify those facts? The 100 series is way better looking than the 200, and is simply more reliable, and better built

I’m very pleased with my 02 after 10 years of ownership. LC cost $60k in 2002 or $100k today so not a cheap vehicle nor cheap to maintain and repair. I would stay with non VVTi engines (98-05) as they are non interference in the event of timing belt failure. It happens…there’s one being auction now on Bring a Trailer. Good luck happy hunting!

The car care nut is just a guy lol. I would not take anything he says as a fact. He’s actually local to me. Nice channel but he’s just a small time mechanic. He’s not an expert ffs or a Toyota engineer.

Ask any mechanic that knows about Toyota, or see for yourself. It’s very obvious the 2uzfe is a more trouble free smoother engine than the UR’s… my 01 tundra and 94 ls400 v8 engines don’t have a single thing you can feel in the engine when idling or driving. Whereas my family members new gx460 and other friends tundras, you can feel the vibration while driving. Everyone admits the 2uz and 1uz are Toyotas best engines. Like this is an actual fact that can’t be refuted. Idk why it’s hard for people to accept. One engine has to be better than the other, they’re not equal, and it’s clear the UZ is better, besides for power

idk man. We have severa UZ cars in the family. I have 3 alone (GS/LS/LX). My brothers worked for Lexus for around 15 years and I’ve never heard him bad mouth a 200 series 5.7 motor. No engine is perfect.
