I don't think you could get a turbo diesel in the 105. Folks I spoke with warned me they are a beast off road, but dogs on road as a result. NO experience other than hearsay, I'll admit.
I saw one HDJ105 for sale in Spain that appeared to be factory. It said hdj105 on the VIN tag on the firewall - I think it had the 1HD-T. I didn't save the pictures. It was too nice and too expensive for me...

I had heard the underpowered on the highway take and was a bit hesitant to import mine due to this, but it was unfounded. On the highway the HZJ105 is fine. I drove mine across canada, could easily speed if I wanted, and it felt like one of the more capable/speedy highway vehicles I have owned. Although most of my vehicles have been old leaf sprung 4x4s or other diesels so I am used to "momentum driving". I could see the 1HZ being a dog if you really weighed it down or lived at elevation with a lot of steep highway grades. Mine has 300k kms, is stock, and has a recently rebuilt injector pump.

A photo from the other day to contribute.

Out of curiosity, is the 4.7L (and 5.7L also, for that matter) V8 engine option common/popular in countries where there are too many remote areas (e.g. Australia) and gasoline may be harder to get (compared to USA)? How do the owners deal with the low gas mileage to get adequate range (maybe big aux tank?), and are their engines still long-lasting to reach 1 million miles if they use any lower grade gasoline than the equivalent of "87 octane" in the US? (Say in really remote areas it's hard for owners adhere to "premium gas only" rule for their LX470/570 right? Or even 87 Octane for LC. May often have to use whatever is available.)
I can commonly get well over 1k km on full main and sub tanks. 1HD and manual tranny.

Very thankful to have recently found my dream HZJ105.

1. Year, model, color, etc: 1998 HZJ105 XPP (Xtreme Poverty Pack, down to the front 3person bench seat), Natural White over Light Grey vinyl seats/floors.

2. Name of owner/screen name: mk216v & Ozzie the Aussie.

3. How long have you owned your 100 Series? First Cruiser?: A month? Third Cruiser.

4. Mileage at date of purchase and present mileage: Less than 105,000km original.

5. Your favorite mods: OEM LSD/sub fuel tank, optional Toyota aluminum Aussie bull bar bumper/tow hitch package/side steps, Outback overhead console. OEM+ mods en route...

6. How your 100 is used, ie. DD, family adventure, overland travel, etc.: Original/1st owner was the Australian CFS (Country Fire Service) where it was used as a Logistics rig and probable beer runner. I'll use it to put a smile on my face, as RHD and manual and slower is damn fun! :D

7. Your 3 favorite photos (keep them updated): See below.

This is Ida, the daughter of a friend of mine who was borrowing Mr. Blue, the 2003 105. She is in love with Mr. Blue.

Mister Blue is my daily in Dubai. Right now I am in North America, just. back from British Columbia where I drove Missus White the 2007 105 around a bit and had a great time.

I googled it and found this article that provides excellent details on the 105. Yes, the ideal combo is the 1HZ diesel with a 5 speed manual.

2001 1HZ 105 series here in Central America.

The 105 came in neither of those engine options. And outside of the the, the IFS 100 did come with manual transmission option too. The non-turbo 1HZ is a great engine but not so great on North American highways. I've driven one. I would do an engine swap.

These are just trim level options. The 105 VX is similarly equipped to North American 100's.
NOPE, frame on a 105 is narrower, evidently for the straight-six 1HZ diesel. Believe me, ARB bumpers had to be majorly modified.

I don’t see where you are correcting what I said. The VX trim level is almost equivalent to the US 100. Maybe we have different ideas of what “trim” is. Trim Level
