No oil to the valves- 2F HELP

Talk to me about this- long story short- pulled my distributor to diagnose an oil leak (no O-ring, thanks PO) and lost alignment. Re established TDC using the mark on the flywheel. I see the slot at the bottom of the distributor hole, and the bottom of the distributor sure looks like it is designed to engage, but when I put the engine at TDC and the distributor rotor aimed at the #1 spark plug wire, that tab on the distributor does not align with the slot. Also, that slot does not rotate when I crank the engine around. How do I know the distributor is fully seated? Is that tab on the end of the distributor supposed to engage with that slot? New here so hoping someone can help me out. 1976 2F engine.

The rectangular machined slot on the end of the distributor shaft fits into the rectangular hole in the oil pump. They are a mated pair.

When the distributor is installed all the way in so it’s engaging the oil pump, it’s top flange will seat flush with its mating hole. There will be zero gap.

If the distributor shaft hasn’t inserted into the oil pump, there will be a big gap and you wouldn’t be able to secure the lock bolt correctly.

There’s a gear on the camshaft that spins the distributor. The distributor then rotates the oil pump.

The gearing on the distributor you can see isn’t straight. When the distributor gets inserted, the shaft spins a little. It’s not a straight fit.

Go over the factory manual procedure how to install the distributor. The info is correct.

Or you can do a shortcut.
I just insert the dizzy shaft so it catches the gear that I want, then lean in over the fender and put a lot of my weight on the dizzy cap and rotate the engine. I feel the dizzy drop that last 1/2" and hear a satisfying clunk as the dizzy seats in the oilpump slot.
It used to be easier with the old starter where you could jump 12v at the starter with a 17mm endwrench. These new gear reduction starters make it so you need a remote starter of some kind.
It may not be correct but it works
