the wifes 95 4runner has no high beams, you know they do not work. when you pull the combination lever back they will come on for flash but push it forward they will not come on, so i pulled the steering wheel and did a continuity test and i am getting continuity through out the switch. so now i am baffled, i do not have a wiring diagram for the 95, but the one i have for an 85, shows that the relay has nothing to do with high low, so it should not be that, it looks as though it would or could be a ground problem. am i heading in the right direction or is there something i am missing? really need to get this truck inspected so she can drive it, since her KIA is in the body shop.

it's the switch. there's a little ball bearing thing in there. junk yard switch. gotta pull the wheel. i did this not too long ago and had to pull the lever cluster apart for just the light switch because it was off a 4runner with cruise control and stuff.

i think i mentioned i did a continuity test on the switch it is working fine. this is another kicker, there are three terminals at the headlight itself, and on all three terminals too ground on the battery i am getting 13.9 volts dc.

trust me. pull the switch off and there will be a little ball bearing and i bet it looks burnt. it's not making contact. you might be able to clean it up. they're usually coated in what i think is dialectric grease. when i pulled mine apart it was all black. i looked at the other one i got off a donor rig and it was all nice with a bunch of clear/white grease.

well i just had the same thing happen to me and that was my problem. i'd try source a junk yard switch and if that's not it go from there. if it works when you pull it towards you to flash and not when you push it forward to have your high beams on that's gotta be the issue.

I have the same problem in my 94 pick up. works when you pull it back but not fwd. Toys4fun, LMK what you come uyp with. In the mean time I will try to find time to pull mine apart.

ok man is this what your switch looks like?

here is the wiring from the high beam selector switch,

white/black stripe, switchable or common.
red/white stripe, flash- this wire is much smaller than the rest.
red/yellow stripe, high beams.
red/green stripe, low beams.

when the switch is in the high beam position, i get continuity between white/black and red/yellow, when i pull forward on the switch to flash, i get continuity between white/black and red/white, when the switch is in low beam or normal position i get continuity between white/black and red/green.

so that means the switch is not the problem, at least to me that is what it means. also all continuity test were taken with a fluke 77+

also from looking at my 85 diagram it looks as though this switch, switches the grounds. in my line of work this is against code, so i have to change my way of thinking. although the 95 could be different.

i'm pretty sure that's not what mine looks like but i'm not really sure what i'm looking at. maybe they changed the switches that year. weird.

my truck is a 92 and the donor switch i got was off my buddies rolled 4runner which i think was a 94. not sure though. and my high beam indicator just stopped working the other day and it's buggin me.

i agree with checking the high/low switch for contact. the headlights use a ground switch directly from the headlight switch. the headlight relay provides 12v for low and high on the same wire and the ground switching is done directly at the switch. i think the wire that gets a ground for high beams is red/green. you need to make sure this wire is getting a ground when the high beams are engaged. 0 ohms with meter to ground. you may not find burnt/black stuff in the switch but you should clean it really good and regrease it.

ive got the same issue. works when pulling back, not when pushing forward into the permanent mode. it has piaaa lights on the front bumper, from the previous owner... i always figured it was a wiring issue related to those lights but i guess they are unrelated now. never bothered with it but will keep an eye on this thread.

mine is an 87 by the way.

OK, so i did some more testing on it today, the battery is low, but i am reading voltage on all three terminals at the head light! WTF?

it is supposed to show 12v on all leads until lights come on. it is ground switching not 12v switching. you are just getting 12v feedback through the filament in the bulb.
