hey there so I saw the long ranger tank was on sale at manafre so I bought it. Just called cruiseroutfitters and asked to order a spare fuel pump and they said it has no fuel pump....then i realized..oops...maybe this tank is 100percent not going to work with my 1991 hdj81 :/
Help?

to clarify I ordered the 38 gallon replacement main tank :/

The 1HD-T motor in your truck has the fuel / injection pump. The tank needs only a fuel pickup. In some cases a lift pump or pump between the tank and motor is needed.

If the fuel tank is specifically made for an 80 series ,it should bolt right in and the fuel pick up and fuel gauge sender should also work. The feed pump on a denso fuel injection pump can pump up to 4 times as much fuel as needed. It pumps the extra fuel to cool the injection pump and sends the excess back to the tank.

Re:Fuel capacity 80 series?
OK, my understanding of the dual tank setup.

All diesels (HZJ80, HDJ80) switch between tanks, using the 2 changeover solenoids under the truck. Eg. sub button pushed, fuel is sourced and returned to sub tank. Same for main tank.

FJ80 carby models (3F petrol, manual trans only) worked the same as the diesel, however no return solenoid.

FJ80 EFI (3F-E auto) had no sub tank!

FZJ80 (late 1992+ 4.5L 1FZ-FE engine) have a pump under the rear that transfers the fuel from sub to the main tank, where the high pressure EFI pump supplies it to the fuel rail.

Hope this helps.

As roscofj73 mentions the stock diesel factory system draws the fuel from the tank to the back of the injection pump. Some folk install pusher pumps and here are some threads on that if you are interested. There are two camps on this...read if you want, make up your own mind and make you own choice.

When I get my factory sub-tank installed in my diesel I will use a pump and transfer over to the main tank. Then the pusher pump will help get it up to the injection pump. There are a number of theads on Mud with details if you do a search. Aftermarket subtanks can use the transfer system too, afaik.

I have the 90 liter (23.7 usgal) sub tank from Long Range Automotive. They made it to order and takes 3 weeks to ship. The kit came complete with the double fuel filler, transfer pump, hoses, clamps, wiring, fuel switch/gauge indicator (4 LEDs show 1/4 tank increments. The pump transfers fuel at a rate of 2 liters a minute from the sub tank to the main tank - so it pushes up the fuel gauge needle up by a 1/4 tank in 10 minutes. I have a combined fuel capacity of 185 liters (48.9 usgal) and a range 850 miles(1,400 km). I imported the kit from from Australia, because an importer from Las Vegas said he could get them, but when I was ready to order he said he is no longer bringing them in. It was was a time consuming and expensive process, but now its installed-its just

thankyou so much everyone for answering my question and confirming what my research has told me.

thanks for sharing that. I am considering adding a small sub tank in addition good to know they have a kit. BTW manafree has the 38 gallon main tank on sale right now :)

I have made and install 6 160 liter stainless steel rear tank on hdj81 to run used cooking oil, with Toyota dual fuel filler tube.
It's labour intensive to install.
Can make a kit if anybody is interested .

I'd be interested in just purchasing a stand-alone tank. PM me if you have a price.

I'd be interested in the price for a stainless tank also

Hi all,d o you want the tank ready to install with all the brackets welded to the tank and mounting holes drilled?then i have to make a jig to make the tank ready to install,if you are handy I can just supply the tank and brackets and you have to weld the mounting bracket s to the tank ,it will be cheaper.
Also who is going to supply the dual fuel filler neck?
I will work out a price in a few configurations.

I'd be OK with just the tank and I can do the bracket welding myself. Just curious about a rough price at this point as the swap is probably way out in the future.

Hi Simon. Curious as well. I have a near complete factory 2nd tank setup to install but will consider other options. Do you have any pictures you can put up that show the tank in place and how it looks in place and how far it drops below the frame rail at the end of frame? Will you consider different sizes or set up for one size only. Rough price only, as mentioned above, would be great.

Thanks

Hi Greg,long time no see.
I have made different size tanks, the first one was thinner, then I made them thicker,(closer to ground),can also add a aluminium skidplate under the tank.
Will get some pictures in next few days .

I would be interested on a rear tank stainless steel.. to be honest what I really want is a 15 gallon fuel 20 gallon water tank for the rear location. thinking about just getting stock sub tank kit then addin a water tank below that...any thoughts?

Interested in 160L sub tank too. I may even bring my truck out to Winterpeg this summer to see family too. Just need the tank, have a dual filler neck already.

Hi all,
I'm still trying to finalise a price, after I get the tank made,I still have to spend a few hrs to fit the tank on the truck and weld mounting bracket onto the tank, and I have to line up the filler hole and fuel gauge sending unit, breather bunk.
I usually use an aftermarket fuel gauge, and just a tube for fuel pickup as the 6 tank I had built were all for vegi oil application.
Can each of you tell me what fuel gauge you want ?
Aftermarket or Toyota?
Aftermarket, need to cut a hole on top of the tank and install the sending unit.
Toyota, need to buy the Toyota sending unit and run a 3 way switch so you can wire it to the stock gauge.
Do you want to do the work of installing the fuelgauge sending unit or I do it?
I usually drill and tap the take for the sending unit screws.
About one hour.
Also if you want a skidplate under the tank.
It has been so cold In Winnipeg I haven't have a chance to take any pictures.
Have been working on intercooler a 2 kzte surf and installing webasto on hdj.
