Hey guys, I am a new Yota owner as I just bought a 1979 4x4 pickup. Sometime before I bought it, it has recieved a 22R engine, 5 speed trans, looks like the rear springs are mounted up front and pro-comp leafs on the rear. 33" MTR's, wider rear axle, 5.71's and a spool in the rear. All-Pro t-case e-brake.

I am in the process of giving it a little TLC , I want to make it a reliable trail rig and good around the house pick-up. Maybe if I feel comfortable enough with it I will have it replace my Discovery as my main offroad rig.

As I drive the truck about 35-50mph, I can hear what sounds like a constant ringing/rattling noise. Almost like someone is tapping on the driveshaft with a small hammer, kind of that hollow ringing noise. I checked all u-joints and felt for play in the t-case outputs and pinion bearings. The front driveshaft has a bit of slop and is really dry in the slip joint, but I dont think that its the problem because it would not be turning with the hubs unlocked in 2wd.

Anyone have any ideas?

P.S. I just realized that I used some horrible English in my title, please don't hold it against me, haha

Welcome aboard Pokey!!! :D

That's a nice lookin' ride!

I would suggest pulling the rear drive shaft out and running around in front wheel drive. This will eliminate the rear d-shaft as a problem, and unload the rear diff, so that can be ruled out in most cases.

I am going to pull the front driveshaft and see if anything changes and then put it back in a pull the rear driveshaft to see if anything changes.

If it ends up being like a tranny bearing or something, I wonder how hard this trans are to rebuild, I have rebuilt a few automatics, but no manuals.

Well, I pulled the front driveshaft, and it made no change. So I will put it back in and pull the rear to see if anything changes.

One thing I did notice was that the previous owner installed an All-pro e-brake on the t-case. It seems fairly loose, for those that have installed one before how have you adjusted the pads? Just so they are riding on the disc lightly?
