So the plot thickens. Go look under the front behind the ARB bar left of center and see if you see a plastic tube mounted on the core support adjacent to the AC condenser. Should be about 3" long and 1" in diameter with wires coming out...that's the other sensor. If it has that, then someone went to a LOT of trouble.. Ultimately the window sticker will tell, but I will be very surprised if Toyota built a 40th in white.
Yes, the black sensor tube is there. Actually I was wondering what it was. Any chance it can be hooked up to a digital display to show outside temp in the car? It's probably the same sensor that's used on later toyotas that have the temp display.

Seems there were threads here about that, so maybe you can search and find them. So post back once you get the window sticker about whether or not this was badged by TMS as a 40th. Is theer a serial number on the console plaque or is it blank?

So much intrigue and mystery to start with, you guys are getting me all excited! Welcome to the board, 40th or no 40th.:flipoff2:

Do you mean the center shift lever consol 40th Anniversary badge? It's does not have a serial number.

TADA!!!!! Ding ding!!! We have an answer. Yours is not original (unless the console badge has been replaced.) Those without serial #s were sold through parts departments as replacements after production ceased. All of the ones that were issued to Toyota Points of Entry (where the 40th and CE dash and fender badges were installed) had serial numbers. I confirmed this with TMS when I was researching the history of the 40th a couple years ago.

Couldn't this just be a Collector's Edition "converted" to a 40th Anniversary Edition by the PO? IIRC, the Collector's Edition would match the description of his rig (auto-climate, but no two-tone leather, etc.) and I believe white was one of the colors the Collector's Ed. was offered in.

The CE was not available in white. It was available in in this color, though I don't recall the name:

i have that same colour on my 97 CE i think it was called .....desert dune pearl ? or somthing along those lines

George's CE is white and he is the original owner.

My family had a 40th Anniversary cruiser but it didn't have two-tone interior! The interior was leather but not two-toned!

The following information is only for US Spec vehicles. OZ, JDM, and Middle-East variants had different specs.

The CE was a 1997 only option.
The CE was available in all "standard" Land Cruiser colors.
The CE had automatic climate control like the 40th Edition.
The CE had the tu-tone wheels like the 40th Edition
The CE had side moldings, logo floor mats, and CE badges. The buyer also received a "special" jacket with the CE logo.

The 40th Edition was a 1997 only option.
The 40th Edition had the tu-tone alloy wheels, side moldings, logo floor mats, 40th badges, and serial number.
The 40th Edition came with automatic climate control.
The 40th Edition came with 2-tone interior.
The 40th Edition was available in 2-colors; Sage & green (6M1)
Sage was only available on the 40th Edition.
GawdafulEmeraldPukeGreen (6M1) was regrettably available on all 80s.

FYI, All LX450s came with automatic climate control. Another mis-fact has been circulating on this forum that should be cleared up and that is the fact that the F&R diff locks were NOT standard on any US spec 80-Series. Not on the CE. Not on the 40th. Not on the LX450. They were available as an option on 93-97 Land Cruisers and the 96-97 LX450.

Yes, I believe this is the explanation for the OPs truck though the picture is no longer showing up. The picture of the truck in post #28 is, in fact, desert dune metallic; a very nice color indeed.

So, sounds to me like I have a Collector's Edition and the PO added the 40th badges and floormats. Thanks for the input!

Fix your #1 post so the pic shows again (you may need to get a silver star.) Does your truck have side mouldings?

Pic should be back up....

It appears to have a CE emblem on the fender. Shoulda been your first clue it is a fake 40th.

Come to think of it, you are correct. I do recall looking at two white CE's along the way...on Cory Fillmore looked at for me in SLC a couple years back I think. The only other thing that the 40th and CE trucks had that I didn't see on your list Beowulf was the Lexus memory antenna.

All '97s and some late 96's had the memory antenna.

Yes. I bought it in Miami and drove back to SoCal. Tuck ran great all the way home, but didn't pass CA smog so now I have to figure out what's wrong. Has a few other minor issues: needs a new ABS sensor in the front and the rear diff lock sensor that tells the ECU that it's locked isn't working - diff lock light keeps blinking even though it's locked. Minor oil leak, but otherwise it's so clean you'd never know it's 10 years old. It's a very nice truck and gives me a head start on all those expensive mods. 135k miles.
Nice 80..always have loved the white color scheme. Just a heads up .. there are some, a few Zip.codes/ counties you can register your truck and not have to worry about SMOGing it.....Ever. I just so happen to live in one of the County/Zip.codes so Never any SMOG and can run whatever exhaust I choose..The bad.. if you have it set up and move, you have to change it back. just saying .
