Newbie 85' 4runner tranny question?

Hello all, Love the forums and thnaks for all the great info.

I just picked up my first yota and it is a 1985 4runner with the fuel injection. My question is the truck has 210K on it and the tranny seems to whine in 1st , 2nd and third gears ...... then when I go to 4th its all quiet and 5th is quiet as well. I talked to one or 2 folks and they said this normal for yota's. I have never had a yota or rode in one this old so I wanted to ask the pro's.

Think its called the counter shaft berrings are bad
1st 2nd 3rd and 5th run on the counter shaft and 4rth dont it goes straight threw so 4rth is silent. I just had this same issues. But mine was worse i swaped a auto to 5 speed and the 5 speed i bought sounded like a rocky margarita. Search around for somone selling another 5 speed. and swap it in. I no for a fact u can have the trans on the ground in 2 hours with hand tools in the dark with a dewalt rechargable worklight and a fold up tool kit good luck the guys ont he forum are great. im shore they will chime in
