Sorry for the overly un-technical question, but I've seached high and low and not been able to find this info.

Most of the off-road vehicles I've driven or passengered have had full removeable/convertable tops. 40 and 74 series cruisers, early blazers, 'mogs, *eeps, samurais etc. So with my current consideration of a 4runner, I naturally turned to the first gens in my quest for fresh air. But to me there hardly seemed a point in removing the rear section of the top if you still had a roof over your head. Then I learned some had sun-roofs of a seemingly decent size. Seems the rear cap removed and an open sun-roof would feel pretty 'converted', and give an easy solid bikini-top-esque option if the weather turns.

So my questions: do all first gen SR5s have sun roofs? Are they more of a vent or do they slide fully open? I've searched but couldn't find many pics. I've seen one fully/permanently removed, but that kind of defeats the purpose. How well do they keep the weather out when closed? The last car I owned with a sunroof soaked the passenger with the first sharp left turn after a good rain

Thanks in advance

They do not all have sunroofs. They do not slide at all. They either tilt up or come off completely.

Usually when a sunroof leaks its because the drains on the A-Pillars get clogged.

Thanks for the replies. I'm kind of on the fence between 1st and 2nd gens. I like the look of the first gens, and the 'vert is nice, but for a daily driver there's some appeal in the convenience of 4 doors and the (I'm assuming) quieter ride, and better weather resistance of a 2nd gen...prices seem lower as well, despite being newer and therefore a couple years ahead on the rust curve.

(eventual) Plans in any case include a 'chaos LT front end, dual cases, and either longer leafs with some decent shocks or links in the back. :grinpimp:

!st gens are getting harder to find these days in decent shape. power train options are limited too. Don't buy an auto buy a 5speed. I'd recommend spending the cash on the newest model you can buy for a DD.
Wheeling a DD hard is stupid. It sucks bumming rides to work cause your rides stuck in the Mts with broken axle.

1st or 2nd gen 4runner? Ah, a question for the ages. No one can answer it but you. I have had 2 first gens, and 2 2nd gens. I have no idea which i like better.

I will say, while the little roof over you sounds gay, I LOVE it! it still feels like a convertible, and you dont have to sit in the sun all day and roast.

My sun roof leaks.
