So the 60 is gone and I got my hands on a nice 1993 triple lock 80.

Fist ever car I bought without ever seeing it before 😅 Anyway I'm not disappointed it's a pretty clean truck for it being in Quebec ... Need a few repairs and maintenance but it will be a better daily driver my diesel HJ60.

For now , basic maintenance to expect ...

Brakes all around
Sway bar links
Lockers not engaging
CEL light not working (may hide bad things....)
Quarters pockets rusted out
Rear heater hose clamps to replace
Windshield to replace
Decent sound system to install...
Rear washer nozzle not working (spays front windshield on every spray position)
Sloppy shift lever to fix

Removed the running boards for now... Catalytic converters are pretty damn low .. will look it up too ...

Once that's all done the fun part will begin.

Swing out carrier , would like OEM ...
Front bumper
1.5 - 2in lift

I have the OEM winch with the bumper cover that goes with it.

Not sure to use the cover , but I like how tucked the winch is. We'll see once there.

That's the plan for now 🙂

Did my rear brakes yesterday , the parking brake was badly stuck.... Took a lot of time but it was worth the hassle. I think It was dragging the truck it feels lighter this morning.

Will probably install the CDL switch today and while at it replace the cluster lights and see if there is any check engine lights (I know there is)

also adding to the list : high beam only work when I pull the switch ... not pushing it. Rear wiper stopped working too ...

Nothing stressfull but annoying

At least one more thing work I guess 😜

Front and rear locker warning lights only flash ... Will try to make them work later today ... It seems it can take some time for the lockers to activate 🤷 we'll see I guess

Fixed what I hoped wouldn't work once fixed 😞

Pulled code 21 and 28... So o2 sensors... No big deal. Will look it up soon . And while the dash is out might as well change the radio and the whole set of cluster bulbs 👌 so the D light P light and o/d light will work again .

I knew buying it that it was a guzzler but damn ahah 150miles on a tank ... Wow ...got like 32L/100km I was expecting more around 22... Let's fix those O2 sensors ...

Rear parking brake probably didn't help ,just like the waved front rotors.

Previous owner changed the calipers and pads ... But all 4 rotors were bad . Now it's done the right way. Much better and fun to drive too.

And finally have decent sound ....

Not top end quality but definitely decent 👌

Started to tackle that poor fuel mileage , ( I know its a Land Guzzler... but 32L/100km on a stock truck with 33 seem unreasonable)

so today's order :

-distributor cap and rotor
-spark plugs
-Oxygen sensors (not sure of the model I got but That sould fit obd1 with maybe a few tweaks)
-fuel filter
-spark plug wires (denso)

not sure it will drop that much but cant be worse... Air filter is nice , oil new harness close to the EGR not burned and well wrapped....

Occasional misfire makes me go that direction ... Found 2 spark plugs in the quarter pocket ? previous owner begun to change them but changed his mind half way in ? Cant be bad to put new ones anyway.

EGR deleted , Pair system deleted .

I really thought the worse part would be getting the EGR pipe off .. 20min and a shortened socket . Easier then I tought!

On the other hand the PAIR system looked like the easy part and it was not ... The studs on the manifold were badly stuck ... Took one more hour to get em out 😤

Blocked the 4 open ports , waiting for new O2 sensors to install in the PAIR ports instead of under the truck.

While at it ,new spark plugs ... Cap / rotor and wires.

Went for a drive ... No more brakes ... Front right brake hose blew ... FML...

Will fix it tomorrow.

On a good note, harness is nice and now safe from EGR incineration. 😅

O2 sensors replaced , no more check engine light. Still a bit of hesitations in acceleration... Vacuums are probably the cause ... So I will change them all.

Relocated the sensors in the PAIR system ports like a lot suggested and it work just fine

Ho and I also worked on the rear locker problem . The locker is working but it seem the sensor is not . The light keep flashing bit I swear it's locked ahah. Also the front end make quite a bit of noise after using the locker . It goes away after a few minutes of driving. Could it be the axle bit field missing grease ?

Well... sad news but it seem its the 80 owner rite of passage ... Head gasket need replacement 🫠 😥

not sure where to start... just overwhelmed for now ... almost regret my 60

Anyway will start gathering parts and run the civic for a while it seem.... but honestly today I would trade that truck for a 4runner in a heartbeat

Can't say I'm not thinking about it ... I'm a cheap MF .... A good DIY guy tho , with access to machine shop ...

Thing is I might end up in the newspaper in the obituaries.... And my wife would collect insurances because she would get away with that for sure ahaha

For now I don't have the money for that kind of project.... Might just slam a Teikin gasket set from partsouq in it and use it for a while like that then I will make my mind.

Anyway even if the white smoke from the exhaust pretty much give it away , I will confirm that my rough idle and erratic power loss come from that ...Since it's obd1 and throw no codes I can't do much with my scanner ...

Ok ... Maybe I was in a bit of panic ...

Seem like theses symptoms could be caused by something else ... Let's break it down

Engine start fine cold , quite a lot of white smoke (or steam). Fells like no power untill warmed up or when I floor it. Between 1200rpm and 2000 it slow down on ANY hill or slope. Throttle feel like no matter how I push it ,it makes no difference until I reach 3000k rpm (most often when it downshift).

No CEL codes , truck is OBD1

So far new spark plugs .. old ones looked like this:

Messenger_creation_0BBBFE7B-BBB2-4C65-ABC4-9C62DB865932.webp

Left to right 1 to 6 . They all look the same but the 6th (not looking so bad tho) New rotor , cap and spark plug wires too.

Air intake hose been changed and most vacuum hoses . Catalytic converter are nice too ,checked em yesterday while fixing my downpipe gaskets.

Deleted the EGR and PAIR system (mostly preventively to protect the wiring loom, witch seem to be ok 🤷)

What else to check:

Been searching all day on Mud and other forums for similar problems and found ECT problems can cause this ,VAF can cause this, also TPS or knock sensors and what I fear the most head gasket.

I Have the fuel filter on the shelf witch might help... Really doubt it's the cause.

I now have a OBD1 scanner and a smoke machine to do more testing before getting into big fees 🥲

Will update along with the tests and I am totally open to suggestions if you had something similar to happen with your 1fzfe.

smoke machine test is negative , so All vaccum are good

CLeaned the VAF and it got a LOT better ... much less smoke , the truck pulls better too !

Will continue the checklist but there was clearly a lack of maintenance on this one ...

finally got my obd1 scanner to work on the truck all sensors are reading o2 readings says RICH but my spark plugs say otherwise... It runs better since the maf was cleaned but the main Issue remain... I checked the bore of the cylinder 6 (the one I doubted for HG) with my camera : not wet or clean , spark plug is brown so I consider it ok.

made a video yesterday will try to figure how to post it ... but I can describe it as the truck being choked and at some point it begin to pull like it should ...

acceleration is laborious if not floored , holding the throttle at 50% it accelerate very lightly and at some point it begin to go like it should.

Will try fuel filter and check for fuel pressure , other Ideas welcome

not even 30 days...that is a huge bummer.

LS Swap is calling...

I am with you on that. The 1FZ is the worst engine I have ever owned. Mine didn't even make it to 90K miles before its HG blew.

The non-AFM versions of the 6L are legendary, offered in the 3/4 and 1 ton GM trucks/vans. Simple, reliable and powerful. I have a 2020 L96 with a 6L90e.

dont have the exact model of the engine im getting ... but its from a 2500 Savana so probably 6l80 or 4l80...

I mean cant be worst than 9mpg on a gutless motor ....

Do you know the year? Mine came out of a 2020 Savana. Last year for the L96. I am getting 14 mpg loaded down, and 15.5 mpg when not loaded down.
