Well not quiet yet. I'm goin to look at a 92 pickup 22re 5spd. 170k I saw this truck roughly a year ago and passed the opportunity bc at the time I didn't need another vehicle. The rig caught my eye because it had an ARB bumper on it. Well things have changed and I could use a pickup truck especially since my daily driven Fj40 has been two days from completion for going on four months. I have been patiently waiting on my land cruiser tub to be powder coated  the rolling chassis and drive train are waiting for the tub everything else is finished and ready to be thrown back together. So I was telling a relative Ive been searching for a toy pickup and he tells me someone at his work has one for sale. A brief description and what do you know its the same truck I looked at a year ago. I spoke with the owner today and sure enough its still for sale. I'm going to look at it Tuesday or Wednesday. I was told it could be bought for 3500 which I'm thinking is a steal. The truck has an ARB bumper with a warn winch and IPF lights. If I remember correctly it has a smitybuilt swing out tailgate, small lift and 32-11.5 tires on black steel summit racing wheels. It's gray in color with a black fender and hood. I believe its had a recent head gasket job but havent confirmed the details with the owner. He did say the truck has power steering and a/c but the a/c needs a belt and recharge. So what do you guys think about the price? Anything I need to look out for? I'm new to pickups.

Confirm the HG job and get receipts if possible. Ask about the timing chain. At 170k it is about due for what would be number three if serviced properly. If the HG was done then this should have been on the list when it went back together.

$3500 sounds fair for a good solid running truck. You could offer less and hope for the best. As with most any vehicle, make sure the motor doesn't make any funny noises, except know that the 22RE does have an unusually loud valve train so don't be too alarmed if it has some light chatter.

I would look at the front upper arms in relation to the bump stops to get an idea of if the torsion bars have been cranked to the max, which will make for a bumpy ride. With an off fender and hood, look at the core support and make sure it isn't cracked or tweaked. The support is welded to the inner fenders so if it was in an accident then unless it was properly repaired, the core support will give it away.

Biggest PM things are the HG question and TC, other than that the 4cyl trucks have a reputation for being nearly bullet-proof. Mine has over 300k on the original bottom end. Might be a little sluggish with the 32's but should cruise well. I have 265/75 (~32) on mine with 4.30 gears and it is a little sluggish.

Good luck.

I'm going to offer 3 for it and hope it doesn't piss him off lol. I'll get the details on the head gasket job and timing chain job as well. Couple of questions did these trucks come with the dual timing chain (width)? What diff gears would be factory? And what size is the rear diff 8" or 7.5" ? I was told the lift was done with some sort of ball joint spacer so the torsion bars shouldn't be cranked up. I'm allready looking for a locker and camper shell for it :)

Id love some tall skinny tires on it do you have a photo of the 265/75 on yours?

Most likely it will have 4.10s from the factory. The rear will be an 8" and the front is a 7.5" in the IFS I think.

The Ball Joint spacers are a good option. I am looking at doing some on my 88 when I get it running. Just make sure the CV's aren't at a bad angle and that the alignment is in spec.

3 sounds like a good starting point if he wants to sell it.

Here is a picture of my 90 with 265s on Factory Tacoma wheels.

Thanks, I actually have a plate bumper that I have for it. It's a long story but I hopefully will get it sorted this winter.

The wheels are actually just primed and painted with duplicolor gunmetal and wheel clear coat.

The Tacoma axle itself is going to be slightly wider WMS to WMS (I think), but you can pull the chunk and swap that into the 92 housing with a little trimming.

MK III Supra LSD will bolt in to the V6 rear end.

No on the dual timing chain. That one sounds a lot like mine. They're really great trucks, about as trouble free as anything ever made. Look for rust, of course. Idler arm, TRE's may need renewal. At 170k The clutch, if original, may be on it's last legs.

Unfortunately I have been too busy this week to go look at it. Hopefully i'll be able to check it out tomorrow. I do remember that the truck was rust free. To be honest I'm not overly concerned of having to work on it clutch timing chain etc mainly because I work on acuras during the day so diving into a engine doesn't intimidate me plus having a lift at my disposal makes it a lot easier. I've allready got the bug I'm allready looking at a elocker and a 2lte swap. :)
