New STARTER for 1988 Fj62

My current Toyota OEM starter, after much due diligence, is starting to show signs of failure via intermittent non-starts with the turn of the key. Installed about 20 years ago, it has led a fairly impressive life of daily reliability. My original starter is on the shelf having been rebuilt many moons ago.
Before I dive into a replacement, I need your thoughts on reputable countrywide (including Dallas) rebuilders for the failing starter and possible top-of-the-line new replacements.

Have you considered DIY rebuild? All the wear parts are available from Toyota and are fairly inexpensive. It’s an easy job, give it another 20+ years of life.

What toytek said^, the solenoid/plunger/contacts are easily fixable. Unless the motor itself is worn out, but would strongly doubt that.

Here are some notes from my last starter rebuild. Anyone out there who could provide me with an updated list of NOS PARTS still available I’d be forever in your debt. I’m assuming I can still use the early 80 series starter parts?

Just get another 28100-60070-84 from any Toyota dealership and be done with it.

Unless, of course, you are just wanting to go through the exercise of rebuilding a starter (which is cool, too).

I just got done rebuilding the starter on my '87 and I thought I would share the part numbers for the contacts and the plunger.

I got the parts from Cdan, and he had to cross reference the numbers for a 3FE starter in an early 80 series. The Toyota computer does not show the individual parts for the 60 series starter.

Anyway here are the numbers...

Plunger Magnet 28235-35080
Starter Contact Kit 28226-72010
Starter Contact Kit 28226-72080

The rebuild couldnt be easier, about 1 hour including pulling the starter, cleaning everything, replacing parts and reinstall.
