Dicked around yesterday a bit. Got the steps off of the rear x member, took some trim parts off (bezel, grilles etc.), and made sure bolts were liberally sprayed w juice. Actually been spraying for at least a week now and was rewarded when all, ALL of the bolts that hold the hard top to the tub came loose. Very easily to my surprise. The only ones that seem to want to put up a fight are where the top meets the windshield but Im gonna keep spraying juice at em.

We also noticed (correct me if Im wrong) that it would be pretty easy to get 2 low out of the xfer. Seems like the little stopper plate could be notched to allow for 2wd to neutral to 2 low? Didnt look too hard but....

Near the end we got bored and started sampling colors, or randomly spraying patches with every spraybomb I had. The ones that looked best were graphite, od green, red, and dune beige.... Lots of time to pick one though.

Took stuff apart.

Ripped out the interior yesterday and got depressed. The floor is a mess, so is the cargo area, the rear wheel wells, tranny hump...... But isnt it funny how no matter how bad something looks, the more you look at it the easier you make yourself think its gonna be to fix?

Pitchers.

100 million dollars to whoever can name this part!

D
That looks like a brake master cylinder piston.

Some more good news. Just got a call from a dude on kijij, hes got 5 40's in his yard and wants to get rid of all of em..... Gonna go rape em on monday if everything works out.

D

So, I just got offered a trade.... A set of bj60 axles, steering box, column, and ps pump (I can pick the bj carcass over) for a set of 4 FOA 2.5" remote rez shocks I was gonna put on the sixty. Gonna think about it.

Reason Im looking into the axle swap, besides the bigger axles, better brakes, and width is that when I jacked the 40 up the other day the frot wheel almost6 fell off lol. The bearings are so friggin loose that I can rock the wheel at least 2" back and forth. Im figuring that its been like that (remember this truck was used for plowing for at least the last 7 years) for a very long time and its likely that the spindle is pooched. Have to take a look to see whats what.

Desisions man...

On another note, the new tub and associated parts are about 7 hours away so I might have them later tonight or tomorrow morning. Cant wait to see them.

D

That's funny man, dudes name is Gilles but he lives just past the town of Warren lol.

Went cruiser hunting a little bit out of town on monday and met up with a guy who was restoring his 69 but gave up. I had the impression that he had a bunch of parts 40's but when we got there it was just the one and he didnt want to part anything (if anyone is looking for a good body/frame/drivetrain (-motor trans xfer)/suspension I can get you his contact info). I did manage to get a couple few things for 200$.

The list

-1 front turn signal
-1 turn signal lens
-3 sets of warn manual hubs ( Im not gonna use them all so once I figure out what Im doing theyll be going in the classifieds)
-a bunch of drums/backing plates and misc brake parts
-an 1983ish mini truck axle and leaf spring set (he was gonna junk em so I figured what the hell...)
-AND 1 f motor from the 69 that the guy had completely rebuilt but let sit outside and now its seized. Gonna throw some tranny fluid in the cylinders and see if i can free it up, at worst its spare parts.
-a bunch of misc. emblems/marker lenses/brake lines.

So I now have the option of running the mini truck drive train (he also has a 22r, tranny and xfer), the bj60 axles, or manual hub and disc brake converted stocker axle. It would make the most sense to leave the drivetrain alone and at most swap in the bj axles/steering since I now have a spare motor but Im more than willing to take suggestions. Now I just have to go back out with my truck this weekend, grab the bigger stuff and then by some freak miracle find room in the garage for it all....

Got a little more done on the rusty 40. Both heaters are disconnected and out, tranny tunnel is out (without one broken bolt? Yup), barn doors are half off and the vent tubing behind the dash is removed. I also took the gas tank out and removed the recessed fuel filler opening from the rusty tub since I need it for the new one. Didnt take many pics, just boring tear down stuff anyways. Hoping to have the tub off next weekend sometime.

Got up early from nightshift today and got inexplicably sucked out to the garage. Got the side steps and the barn doors off the old tub, that was fun. Started w wrenches and finished w a grinder lol. I then smartened up and busted out the plasma to rip the tub apart. Thaere were up to threee layers of steel in some spots but it cut like butter. Got most of the floor out under the seats and the rear quarter/wheel well on the ps is gone. If I manage to get up at a decent time tomorrow the rest of the tub should be on the floor.

D

Piles and piles of rust on he floor...

Whoever redid this previously didnt cut out any old steel it seems, just plated over the old rusty stuff over and over and over again. Nothing like cutting through 3 layers of steel and an inch of bondo. Theres a thick assed channel contraption acting as a tub cross member thrown in there for good measure as well.

It was way too much fun destroying it.

Lol, just needs the gas tank man.... and somewhere to sit lol. Nah I have a snow blower, the snow plow thing was a way to justify the purchase you know?

Since the old wheel studs were toast and the holes in the hub oblong we threw on the spare wheel hubs I bought and a set of the manual locking hubs. Hubs lock and unlock mint and I can throw the wheel back on.

Found the markings on the motor above and over a bit from the starter and everyone agreed it looks like it says 2F... I guess thats good. Best pic I could get.
