Before purchasing the road hazard certificates, make sure you see EXACTLY what the certs cover. Discount Tire here in Greensboro/High Point had a demo tire that had yellow and red paint stripes on it showing what is covered. They take a line about 25% outward on both sides from center, and then an area beyond that about 10% on either side thats "possible" depending on the angle of the entry (more than 25 degrees, they dont cover it).

SIDEWALLS and the outer/inner 20% of the tire are not normally covered. Might be a lil different story if youre buds with the tire guy.

He said they just started that policy a couple months ago.

Thanks for the heads up.

I think I'll go ahead and get 5 tires the same size. Then I can work on a rear tire carrier in the future.

New policy? I'll have to double-check with my local America's Tire Co. to see what the deal is. It used to cover all damage with the exception of vandalism. And damage could be anywhere on the tire.

I'm running 285's with a 255 spare, and the 255 clears much better, as far as spending a bunch on a spare I bought my spare used for $50 and it has 80%+ tread. If I could do the whole thing over I would have gone with 5 255's, Mainly for the mileage, also, I love the look. Wide 33's just look wrong on a rig that's built for a safari.

This looks like the local policy for what flats they will repair, complete with the tire painted with red and yellow areas. You sure they were referring to the road hazard warrantee and not which types of flats they can/will repair?

Around here, the cert covers anything that happens to the tire as long as it has useable tread.

I was under the belief of "anything with useable thread". I think your onto something in regards to the picture of "fixable damage" versus "replaceable".

I have had 3 BFG A/T's replaced under the Sears road hazard warranty. One was clearly off-road damage. The sidewall had been shreaded. No questions. No issues. $0 cost.

The first 2 replaced tyres were really an odd incident. The parking lot at work had been resurfaced during the winter. On a very hot July day I accidentally parked directly over a crack that had been repaired. The front tyres were hot; the asphalt was hot; the repaired area was even hotter. When I left that evening there was about 2 lbs of gooey mess lodged in the tread of each front tyre. Long story short... Sears cheerfully put on 2 new tyres. $0 cost.

Surface are also matters. I would not run a tire that was a..... .

Just wondering how surface area matters in regards to the AWD system, as long as your drive plates are spinning at the same speed it wouldn't seem to matter if you had a 305 on one side and a 33 inch bicycle tire on the other......

Well first off I just called Discount Tire Direct (online version of America's Tires) and got the "certificate for free replacement" ($19) on the 255/85R16 BFG MT that I just bought. They told me I could just call their customer service and tell them the tire was damaged and they would mail me a new tire free of charge and free shipping!! that is cool especially since there is not an America's Tires in my town...so that is their policy as of today and that certificate is for the "life" of the tire which ends at a tread depth of 3/32" (I think)

Anyways secondly I think getting a different size tire for my spare was a good choice i run 285/75's so this tire has the same diameter but gives me a bit more clearance underneath. I am not planning on cycling my spare into the tire rotation mainly b/c when I took the spare off (for the first time:D ) it had A LOT of pitting on the surface of the rim! Also do not see a rear bumper anytime soon either:doh:

If you change the size of your tires you are going to have to get a fifth tire for a spare that is the same size so you will be spending the money anyways and i do not see myself ever going away from 285's...

ps i SWEAR that 255 tire weighs more than my 285's i dont know how i am going to get that on top of my truck if i ever end up going that direction!!!
