I was planning on just doing a solid axle swap on my 1987 IFS truck, but now I have a 1983 rolling chassis frame with of course a solid axle. I am going to swap over my 1987 Xtra cab along with the bed. The bed is already bobbed 13 inches, so it may match up over the wheel wells, but if not, it can get bobbed some more in the front section of the rear wheel well. I currently have a 22R and want to go to a 22RE. Should I just covert the current engine over to EFI, or get another engine? I figure with the Frame open as it is, it will be easy to just install a new engine into it as it sits. I will get some pics this afternoon. Another new project, yeah like I need any more projects!

I just wanted to say, good luck. We're all counting on you.

Dave

You will need a 22re you can't really convert a carb engine to EFI as far as I know. Your '87 isn't EFI?

I am currently doing a body swap of an '89 4runner to an SASed '94 frame while at the same time doing a 3RZ engine swap.

My 87 is carbed. I am looking for a 22RE engine with harness, fuel tank and all the other stuff that goes along with the EFI. I will either just use the current engine I have or get a EFI engine.

You can easily upgrade a carbed engine to EFI, the heads are the same. Lots of people have done it. You will have to drill and tap a hole in the side of the block over near the oil filter for the knock sensor, but it's really not that hard, just be careful.

You should see most of the mini's here, they convert them to carb or buy a carbed engine for their truck.

why do you say that? I would much rather have an EFI engine compared to my carbed engine.

Show me what you are workin with.

Went out to the property today and took some pictures of the frame I am going to swap over to. Lots of work to be done and many parts to buy before I even start. Gawd this is fun!

There are some really off the wall replies in this thread..

"Counting on you.."

"Swap in carb.."

WTH, are you kidding me?? What happens if you run a carb really off camber, it stalls out b/c it floods, with EFI if you actually do wheel it you won't kill the engine at the worst possible moment.

Sometimes the internet's a little short yellow bus in disguise. Get the thing built up, keep posting all you can, pics especially and just ignore the stupid crap. ;)

So got a couple things done today. Did some grinding and cutting. Removed the nerf bars that were stick welded on, removed the push pull steering box and started to clean up the frame. In the process of saving some money for the high steer conversion. That will be next to go on!
