I've heard that Kenwood is slated to come out with the next revision to the D710A 'this fall'? Supposed to incorporate GPS/APRS right into the radio this time. For the life of me I can't find any info on the web about this... anyone else heard of it and has a link to a release date/price?

I'll probably make the jump. The Yaesu radio is such a mess at the high end. The FTM-350(A)R never had the options I got on my VX-7R and the FTM-400 doesn't seem to improve on it.

With the 400's arrival I would expect Kenwood would have something sooner than later.

Oregon, look into DStar and the Icom 2820.... Once you go digital, you will only go back to analog when you are forced to.

Hey dude, I dont wanna take this thread off topic but I will; what issues did you have with the yaesu?

Side topic but if your interested in APRS as I am but don't want to spend big money our would like more flexibility from vehicle to vehicle then check this out:

Blutooth TNC from Mobilinkd: http://mobilinkd.myshopify.com/products/bluetooth-kiss-tnc

ARPSdroid app; use your android tablet or phone as the UI, GPS, text input, mapping/display tool etc.

Any 'ol VHF radio, I'm thinking a Motorola Maxtrac commercial radio would be cheap, powerful, and high quality.

IMO you could put together a superior APRS set up due to the vastly better UI on android vs. trying to input data to a radio face. Android can function as the map display, input screen, GPS receiver, and output screen. The gear left in the vehcile would be of low value to a thief, you could build multiple RF set ups and move the mobilinkd and android from vehicle to vehicle or vehicle to backpack, etc. etc.

I haven't put this together yet but I'm quite tempted to try it out.

No memory groups.. you get 1 bank for one side and 1 bank for the other. You can't organize them into subgroups like you can on the VX-7R. Also there is no free programming software (or wasn't when I last looked.. the VX-7R has VX-7 Commander for free), which Kenwood always seems to include for free.

It astonishes me that the flagship mobile radio has fewer features than the handheld.

Neat, I just downloaded the aprsdroid app and it seems to work fine via the internet/data connection of my phone. I ordered one of the mobilinkd units to play with, cheap enough and hackable which is great. I made my own AVR based tracker unit (hardware and software), so having a unit with BT seems like it's a good step forward especially using the Android app to run it. I used AVR uC all the time, so have the tools and know how to play with the mobilinkd hardware. As you say, the UI on an android device will leave any hardwired radio 'app' for dead.

End of derailment...

cheers,
george.
