Hello all,
In December I bought a 1988 fj62, been looking at these for a long time. Like all the ones I found, this one has a bit of rust around the roof. Hoping to get that taken care of soon. This forum has been super helpful so far and I appreciate all the information that is shared. Thanks
Everette
Post up some pics of your rig. Include pics of the roof rust too.

Just saw you’re in Sparkle City. I’m just down I-26 in CHS. I’ve got one of my 62s in Greer at the best Land Cruiser paint and body shop in South Carolina, (I’d argue the Southeast.) It’s the second truck they’ve done for me, and I’ve got two more n deck to drop off once LC4 is done in early February.

Sing out if you need anything.

Welcome!

Don't wait too long to address this, even if you don't get it totally fixed 100%. At the rain gutter, there are 3 pieces that come together and spot welded. The rain proofing from the factory is a seam sealer that will have hardened and crack decades ago, allowing water to sit down on the bare metal. Once the rust gets in there, it won't stop because the water is seeping in there all the time. Elbox grease and a big flat blade screwdriver will pop it all out, but not without a fight. A little heat gun application can help a little. Once out, carefully apply rust converter and let it cure. That will slow it way down. Then, if the roof isn't perforated, put in some 3M self leveling seam sealer.

Follow the link in my sig for the 62 to see what bad looks like in there. If you want some other eyes on it, I'm just south of Charlotte and happy to chew the fat if you want to make the drive.

Thanks. Good to hear you are local. I have been working on this. I have cut out all the rust I could find and I am in process of welding in new material. It’s been a learning process!

Thanks. I did this and decided to cut it all out and weld in new material. Every shop has a long wait so I decided to tackle it myself. We will see how it goes. I’m having fun so far.

Good on you for tackling the job yourself! Congrats and welcome to the 60 wagon club!
Just to be sure, have you removed the headliner? welding sparks can catch that material real quick and you won't like what happens.
:)

Yes. I removed it in pieces. It was fairly rotten and fell apart. New one on order! Right now I have all the glass out, bumpers off, headliner out, all chrome and badges off. Working thru welding in new metal. I’m having a lot of fun.

Here are some pics of the Fj62 and some rust pics too. You can see where I have cut out some rust.
