Hi everyone,
My 1987 FJ60 needs a new battery, and I have had good luck with Costco batteries in other vehicles so I want one in the 60. I went to Costco yesterday and their application book does not list a battery for the 60.
Has anyone put a Costco battery in their 60? If so, what Costco battery code did you use?
Does anyone have some measurements of the stock 60 battery (I don't have my 60 at the moment, so I can't measure mine)?
While at Costco yesterday, I took some measurements. The batteries that I measured are the following codes : 4, 23, and 9.

Code 4: 11 1/2 wide ( terminal to terminal), 7 1/2 long, and 7 1/2 high

Code 23: 10 1/4 wide, 6 3/4 long, and 8 high

Code 9: 10 1/2 wide, 7 long, and 7 high

Any ideas?

Thank you,
Zack

I'm fairly certain the original battery size is a Group 27.

I found some dimensions online.

L x W x H
12-5/8 x 6-3/4" x 9"

HTH :)

Pretty sure it is the above. Costco batteries (Kirkland) are made by Interstate if I remember correctly, so you would be getting their Mega-Tron I believe. When I was looking I think the Code 25 or 65 were the ones I found were right for the LC.

You can use this site to help some.. you want fairly high CCA for our trucks http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/local/kirkland-auto-batteries.htm

I was just in Costco earlier. Looked at batteries. Sure enough 81-87 Landcruiser 4.2L was in the book. It said group 27.

They didn't have one on the shelf, but any store should be able to get it.

You can fit a larger battery, if you want to. Measure the tray size, depth, etc and get one that fits with the terminals on the proper sides. Marine starter battery is nice as you've got a couple of terminals with wing-nuts for accessories. I *think* I went with a group 31 Platinum Die Hard, but I'd have to check to be sure.

Kirkland batts, though, are consistently highly rated.

That's the thing the group 27 battery is not sold by Costco.
I will use the measurements That you provided to see what Costco code battery fits.

Costco in TX and TN had 27s

Ok that's great! The only question is what number Costco battery is it? The group 27 number is a generic/universal battery number, and not in direct correlation to the Costco number?
Does anyone know what the actual specific Costco battery number is; ie: 4, 9, 23, etc?

Thanks,
Zack

Just got a group 31m for my 40 at costco, look at the number on the battery, it will show the group size, the costco label/tag will only show their number, dont bother asking the tire guy....

I know they had group 27 as I looked at those also, again look at the battery for the group #

I happened to be at Costco today, I was wrong, no group 27's at my store

Ok I picked up my 60 this afternoon, and I had the chance to measure the Interstate battery currently in the truck utilizing the stock hold down bracket. The battery measures 10 1/4 L, 7 W, and 8 H. So based upon those measurements, it seems that the Costco "fitment" code 9 battery is the best (http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/local/kirkland-auto-batteries.htm) fit. The specs of the code 9 are : 10 5/16 L, 6 7/8 W, and 7 3/16 H. The Costco code 9 battery translates to a BCI group number 34. The specs of the battery are 795 CCA and 1,000 CA. What do you think?

I know this is an ancient thread, but there wasn't an update. I just wanted to let everyone know I picked up a Costco battery, fitment code 9, and did the swap in the parking lot. Terminals were in the right spot and my 60 started right up. The hold-down works okay with the new battery, but it could slide side-to-side too easily for my liking. I took some cardboard and folded it into a rectangle, duct taped it together, and wedged it between the battery and the side of the truck. So far so good.

The hardest part was carrying the old battery back to the tire center for the core charge, I didn't expect the tire center to be such a long walk from my parking spot...

lol.....I have done the same but got wise and realized they had the cart things ;)

I not the kinda guy that does this(I would forget anyway) but the return policy is so easy you could just return as defective every 2 years and get a new one

I did end up using the fitment code 9, and it works fine. The only "mod" that was needed was to place the battery on a small riser, to allow the use of the stock hold down bracket. I actually used a riser/spacer from an Optima battery. The guy at the local Autozone gave me the riser free of charge.
