the 55 isn't my thing, but for that price still a better deal than what I got into.
Mat these things happen and its part of the car business.
consider it as small price to pay and valuable lesson for the future. at least you didnt buy it of ebay and have it shipped. i have seen many POS 40's and 45's go down south for huge money.
this is my opinion but i think its pretty much applies more often than not:
-never trust an old man!!!!!
-unless you are buying one of two collecteble Ferrari's, dont go to the interior.
-there is a reason things sit around in a field for extended time.
-and last, even 25 years ago, it was hard to find any of these rigs that were not rotted out. it would be silly to think you would find a virgin unit in a field sitting around waiting for the right buyer as we all know there is a cult following.
i bet you are not the first or last person that looked or will look at this thing and get dissappointed.

I've bought vehicles off old guys before, some are good some think their scrap is gold. It varies. The interior does have a couple good things to offer, many parts are a lot drier than the rest and vehicles last longer. If I wanted a domestic pickup I'd be set. There were several in yards that we passed by the highway in good shape. A couple nice Willy's pickups too before Osoyoos.
I'm not looking for a virgin, but something that isn't totally rotted away would be nice. I know I have better odds of being struck by lightning than getting a barn find that has been stored in a dry place for 20 years. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop walking out in the rain with an iron spike

I'm sorry to hear matt but I gotta say I had a little

That sucks and I sympathize with your frustration. I know some more Eastern European ethnic jokes that might cheer you up....
Its seams to be the deal when buying old cruisers.... I have owned over 40 cruisers and about 3 FJ45s in various conditions...

John @ Radd was offered one almost rust free for I think (memory fading) for about 8K, he passed
on the deal.. Turns out I spoke with the owner who told me one of the old fabled stories..
He had been working, flying his helicopter over a shed of sorts with the back end of a FJ45 hanging out.. He later inquired with the company who owned the land, asked how much for the 2 fj45s, not sure what number they came up with but it was a couple grand I think..
Turned out they were going to pay him to pull the two trucks off the property
..one was a rust bucket the other pretty nice...

Sorry to hear it did not work out. Really sucks spending time and money and then finding it in that condition.
