Do NOT acid dip or sand blast as there'd be only frail little bits left :frown: I know you said you're a weldor, but sometimes you just gotta let it go, even if it's a 45. I thought I was bad about throwin $$$ at a rust bucket  I'm not sure I'd even take that for free  Good luck on the resto
PM me yer phone# & location so I can talk some sense into you ;p

Wow look like you have a lot of work in front of you. I started off with a 40 project and found out that it was in a similar condition and a lot more than what I expected. I wanted something that I was able to drive and after two years I gave up and bought my 45. Before you start dumping money into it put together a plan. Figure out what you are missing in terms of parts and what it would cost as some are more rare/expensive than 40's (e.g. hard top). What are your plans for the truck. If you are planning on using it for a wheeler it looks like it might be a good canidate but you are doing a resto I would look for something else. Just my 2 cents.

yea....thats the thing, i dont wanna do it quick, its a project for me and my father to work on and complete together so im not really all that concerned about how long it takes...just that we do it right and enjoy doing it

as far as parts go....to the best of my knowledge its complete minus the tail-lights and bed, ill be getting the bed along with a tub from sea potato and the tail lights im also thinking that a painless harness might be a good investment as well but i will have to make a decision farther into things...will it cost lots of money? yes i have no doubts. will it take upwards of a couple 1-2000 hours hours? yes im sure it will... problem is....once i get it in my head to do something....to me its worth while to see things through, specialy when im told that it cant be done. i dont mean to say that i dont value opinions and advice as i know i will ask for both while stripping it down and putting it back together, unless its simply to say it cant be done...

leaping deer- i have a 40 that i drive and wheel along with a BJ42 and HJ60 which are also in the family and ill have acess to so as far as something i can drive...im not too worried

bah, everyones so fricken negative.

wanna do it quick? aqualu tub, frame patch, flat deck, bikini top. DONE.:hillbilly:

if you're taking a couple years, patching up a tiny little body like that isn't that big a deal.

;p = jokin dude...... I'd actually be :bounce2: to get a 45 in any condition. Good to hear of the father/ son build goin on, not enough of those. Can't wait to see some of those welding skillz put to the test :D

well...hooked up the boat tank with some fresh gas in 'er and fired her up today....just kind of putzed around the yard a bit...she really needs brakes! what are the birfs on these? will it be a 27 spline like the 60 birfs? im buying a 60 axle off a guy in my club to do disc brakes on it and it would be nice if i had some useful birfs left over as trail spares for the 40. LC you shall see the welding skillz put to the test...ill post pics of the bumper im making for the 40. I always kind of liked the idea of father son builds and kinda figured it would never happen....my dad dosnt know a whole lot about cars but i guess he caught the cruiser bug from me over the past years and i was shocked when he agreed to build the 45 with me, he also never thought he would do a engine swap but....we put a 2F into my 40 over a weekend...my mom of course just kinda shakes her head and rolls her eyes every time the 2 of us are under the hood of the cruisers.

anyways that tub of sea potato's is in WAY better shape and were going to pick that up some time before christmas break is over, its in pretty good shape...finish my 40's bumper and never know...maybe ill start pullen stuff off the 45!

Wow, wish my head was screwed on as well as yours when I was in HS. You have an excellent outlook for this project and I wish you all the best. I waited until I was 41 to get mine and it is great working with my dad (now 75). Too bad I didn't start a project 20 years ago, I wasted a lot of time not appreciating my pops.

Congrats!

:grinpimp:

the birfs are finespline with the smaller bell, so to put the 60 ones in there, you have to grind the insides of the balls a touch...I think the lenth of the stub is a bit different too, I think it was longer, so you need to keep the 45 lockouts to fit..

all the same stuff, just requires a bit of mixing and matching...:hillbilly:

just lemme know when you want to come pick up that stuff, and bring some gorillas if you have access to any...;)

merry hoho.

hhhmmm so im thinking i should be able to keep the 45 knuckles, birfs ect and just put the discs on it...im not realy concerned about the axle strength so im fine with leaving the birfs well enough alone but brakes are kind of nice to have...

oh yea, seapotato...tomorow? 9am?

Yotawheeler, you have my respect for giving this 45 a new lease on life; this'll be a challenge but it's not like you're reinventing the wheel or anything, it's just metal. Keep us posted on the progress

Yotawheeler can't wait to see your project progress. I wish I could get my 13 year old son and/or 10 year old daughter interested in wrenching, maybe some day. Well have a great time with your father building the 45.

agh...yea, this is starting to get to me, the truck has been sitting for SOOO long and i still dont have a place to work on it yet.

gus: yea i know im not reinventing the wheel...i never said i would or was, its going to be one hell of a challange for my father and i as this is the first time we have tried anything of this nature.

Hogan: ill start posting pics of the tear down as soon as i get the shelter up and start work!

Wow with the negativity! :)

It's got potential in the right hands. Just take your time with it and enjoy the process!

bah, shelter? you pansy ! When I was your age, I built a cruiser on bare dirt in a snowstorm.....

heh, don't worry about it man, in a multi year project a month is nothing.

You forgot to mention you were walking up hill both ways too. :)
