First off, I want to thank NVPROSPECTOR (Tim France) for all his help with this route (Overland Routes page) and taking the time to put the work in to making it easier for others to share the experience. I also want to thank UPCRUISER (Kristian Saile) for recommending the Lunar Crater. We are fortunate that there's people like you out there that don't mind sharing info when you can. Hopefully this trip report will make you proud.

This was one of our top 5 overland trips we've ever completed. I would do it again - tomorrow if i could.

Enjoy everyone...

Another great trip report. Thanks for sharing. Those snow shots are spectacular!

Great report Dave! I just put this one on my must do trips.

Did Gabe make his famous pie holes for you around the fire? He had us making those at SoCal RDV and now I need to get my own dowel to make them.

Unfortunately I was in a tizzy getting ready for this trip. Panic packing and the fact that I only had one fridge for this trip (I know, poor me, only one fridge) and I totally spaced the pie hole makings, brought the sticks though  We tried to find the biscuits at Beatty, but no luck. Oh well, it was still a great trip :D

I promise, whoever is on the next trip will definitely be gobbling up my delicious pie holes :grinpimp:

.

Pie Holes?? Tell us about this!!

.

Here are the steps as I remember them:
1.) Take a wooden dowel about 1 1/2" - 2" in diameter by 5"-6" long and put a long metal rod into the dowel. (Long enough that you can hold the dowel over a fire comfortably without getting burned)
2.) Coat the wooden dowel with PAM cooking spray.
3.) Take instant biscuit in a can and wrap the end of the dowel and up the sides with the dough making a cup shaped around the dowel.
4.) Slowly cook the dough over a fire continuously spinning the dowel taking care not to burn the dough.
5.) When the dough is done it will slide off the dowel and you will have a cup shaped pie crust.
6.) Fill the pie hole with pudding, eat and enjoy!

You forgot a few "optional" steps... ;)

1a.) 6"?!?! Sure, that's what we tell our wives, really only about 4".

3a.) The "experienced" pie-hole'r might use his/her teeth to apply the biscuit to the shaft.

4a.) Keep your biscuit covered shaft out of the fire (coals are your friend) and enter the pit at various angles to ensure the sides get the attention they need. Keep an eye on your tip, don't want to burn that!
