Okay, I have the chance to buy an FJ80, I think it's a good deal but would like some opinions/thoughts from you guys. so here it is-(copied from his add)-

It has a lot of goodies too. It is a 91 fj80 w/ 214k Adult miles ! factory diff locker, factory four link, winch , small system ,c.b. , beadlocks , lights, Fantastic for a hunting lease etc. etc.

I did find out that it does NOT have diff locks, he was referring to the Center Diff Lock. Also, the interior is cloth, Comes with 3rd row seats, and the beadlocks are custom made on steel wheels. tires are 35" baja claws with good tread.

Basically how much would you pay for it? That is the main question. And or whats it worth? but willing to listen to pros and cons
Any other ?'s to help give your opinion let me know.
Thanks,
Andy

Tough call because let's be honest, 214k on any vehicle is 214k..
I personally am not a fan of the Baja claws performance/ you gotta wonder about leaks on custom made beadlocks.

That being said,4-5k would be my max on that truck. Have you driven it yet? More than anything that is what's going to matter for You're taste- budget/if it drives great-set up exactly how you want then it may be worth Much more to you. Last thing to add, there was a white 80 here in springs with 180k on the clock an old man emu lift and some comperable 33's for 3400 obo. If the guys asking too much I'd sit it out and relax with cash in hand.

Don't be afraid of the cloth, embrace it! Having dogs and being in the outdoors a lot leather would be a pita with it getting dirty, freezing or burning on the arse.

How is the maintenance records? 80's can be a little pm heavy if neglected

No lockers can still wheel well if you throw a lunchbox in the rear, but for the front an elocker swap is the most likely option

3fe = meh

it's a 91, so it's got the 3FE, not the 1FZ. I don't have any personal experience, but the 3FE is much less desirable. Not that it is necessarily a bad motor, because it's not, but many believe it to be underpowered for the 80 series.

my $.02

x2 - has it been re-geared? a 3FE pushing 35s at altitude on stock gears could require alot of patience.

Andy, Knowing what you would like to do I would pass on a vehicle without lockers. Yes, you are a better driver than I am but a locked truck is not that uncommon. I'm continually impressed with what a fully locked 80 can do. Other things like tires are much easier to swap, thinking of your back here and axle swaps. But then again I think David M. has an axle. As for mileage it is a bit high and I prefer the 1fz if given the choice.

Here is another 80, there are quite a few out there on Craigslist. Some owners don't know what that switch does or if it is engaged or not. When I bought mine the guy thought that the blinking light meant they were engaged.

1993 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

My rambling babbling 2 cents

Just found this parts truck for lockers

If you get a ridiculously good deal -- buy it. If the guy wants what it's worth -- pass.

I'm with Anthony here, 214,000 is a lot on a vehicle, no matter who makes it. Andy, I know you're kinda on my page and tired of working on your damn rig all the time.....this rig is gonna need a lot of time. I know you'll keep the pickup, then you have two rigs to buy tires for.... pay title fees on.... batteries.... oil changes.... brakes.... Save the money and put quality suspension seats in your current rig.

Thanks Guys,
I am actually thinking about selling my mini:frown: The thought was to get something that the wife and dog could fit in as well as something a little more daily driverish, or even let the wife drive in heavy snow in during winter, not that we get snow anymore. Also, while I am tired of working on my rig, working on something new might be fun, for awhile at least. While this 80 is not ideal with no lockers, engine, miles etc. One thing I really want to do is 350 chevy swap into an 80.

I am going to pass on this one. I have a few other things going right now anyway. If anyone is interested in it, you could get it for $4000.00 and maybe a hundred or two less than that. FYI it's not in Colorado.

For 4k a land cruiser isn't the best deal(unless ur very patient and someone doesn't buy it before you)
You're best bet(ear muffs to u die hard yota folks) a land rover discovery.
No really, if you don't care about gas/ want something with solid front-rear and crazy comfy...
4k will get you one with 120k, much newer and a bit nicer inside.

If you're building a crawler than only god can forgive you for ditching a mini and buying a land yacht I mean cruiser. Ya they are capable/ but let's be honest. For a stock larger 4x the disco is a better deal, 99and up come with a crazy amazing electric traction control system in place of lockers. The stock diffs can be built stronger than Toyota axles plus a v8 factory-hill decent, and 3 rows.
Just keep in mind that 4k for a 80 is not the appropriate budget for one that won't need some Serious wrenching love to daily drive/wheel
Hope that helps add some insight, Anthony

I just got a 99 Land Rover Disco II, the thing leaked in several places...I got it from a rover shop and they told me it's that way for all of them...the engine block is aluminum and they overheat and warp the heads...so be conscious of that. They also have an ABS system that craps out and gives you the 3 amigos lights...which is usually the shunt valve. Other than that they are good vehicles... (I got mine all buttoned up to ship overseas...it cost me extra!!)

Why did I buy one then? It was the only thing I could think of to offer the rust gods of the Azores.

Does this mean we will now be putting a Rover on our Logo :D

Rover schmrover...id but buy a jeep long before i bought a modern rover. I believe we have a mole among us, lol

Keep on looking, with the gas increase people will be panicking trying to get a smaller vehicle so you should be able to find what you want. Ill keep a look out for an 80 with lockers for you. Would you travel for one?

<----- Closet Jeeper

we don't have another closet jeeper among us now do we?

:D

Rover schmrover...id but buy a jeep long before i bought a modern rover.

I second that, I'd buy a Cherokee before I bought a Rover, Rover engines are very troublesome with that rear main seal leak, and parts are astronomical. Cherokees are pretty bulletproof once you ditch the Dana Turdy-five.

I had a disco back in the day, granted it was a disco 1. Bought it and drove it for quite a while. Sold it with a little over 70K on the engine and everything imaginable under the hood was leaking. Great wheelers but not very reliable. I picked up my LX450 about a month ago with locker and 175k, stock with good levels of upkeep for $5800. Ill never buy a rover again. REALLY REALLY happy with the LX. Don't rush. You'll find what you are looking for if you are patient. Don't settle though.

Andy,
If you are looking for a stock FJ80, hold out for a '95 to '97. That is from experience. David H has a '93 and I had a '94. The newer ones got more horse power from a better intake manifold. If you are going to do a sb350 then you can go to the older 80s just look for full floating rears the '91 and '92s are mixed full and semi floating. The 1FZE is a double overhead cam engine and lugs great but it sings when you put on a supercharger. Toyota shanged transmissions during the 80s run some are better than others. Look at advance adapters before you settle on a doner for a 350. I see blown engine 80s out of denver on a regular basis. $1200 to $1800 with a blown engine. I still have a elocker third in the garage that i want to part with. Call me and I will give more advice.
