After it warms up I'm going to pull the flares and do the body work on the 97. Currently its white (single stage paint) in decent condition but not great. I am planning on doing white Monstaliner on the entire exterior. Is it ok to just scratch through the paint with a green 3m pad and then use cleaner degreaser before applying the stuff ? Or are you guys running some sort of primer underneath to help with adhesion. I would like to hear results from those that have done it either way, especially if you have had any issues with the adhesion.

If paint is in good shape, just scuff and wipe down with MEK. Bare metal needs primer, plastics need an adhesion promoter.

It will come with detailed instructions, very important to follow them. No primer needed. The basic steps are: wipe down with solvent, scuff up paint, wipe down with solvent again, apply ML.

I did my roof and am happy with results. Like with any paint job - take your time doing proper prep job, that is the key to a quality result. Make sure area is well ventilated, for your own safety/health.

There is also a huge ML thread on here if you do a quick search. Good luck and post up pics when done!

Yup:

Wipe down with MEK

Scuff

Tape off

MEK again

Apply

For the sake of saying, use MEK with a respirator, in a well ventilated area, and with at least nitrile gloves. MEK is bad stuff.

Make sure you pick a day that has low humidity...Monstaliner absorbs moisture to cure...the more moisture the shorter the pot life.

Good to know

Are you guys having any issues getting the tape off after the liner cures ?

Remove all tape as soon as you're done with the 2nd coat. DO NOT wait any longer than you have to.

Some good points so far. You guys have already made this job a lot easier as I was expecting to have to shoot primer then retape for the bed liner. Do any of you know how much liner I need to get to do a whole truck ? I will probably spray it since I have a texture gun, but if I can't find a good indoor location for that then it may get rolled on.

2 gallons is more than enough for the whole truck... Did min this weekend.

I know you don't use MEK on plastic (like fender flares) but do you need to scuff up the plastic before applying the adhesion promoter?

I did

You have to scuff plastic yes. Use something to clean it. Alcohol maybe?

Remove the tape immediately after the second coat.

This project got put on temporary hold do to things like a winch, armor, and some upcoming and much needed PM. I think I will slowly start prepping the body. I need to de flare and start fixing some dents and minor rust before it will be ready for lining.

Definitely need 2 gallons. My gallon did the bottom third of the entire 80 in 2 medium coats as well as the flares, I mean to say that the whole 80 was monstalined on the bottom third including around where the Flares attach and the flares were lined separately. I'm going to spray the whole thing with UPOL tintable raptor liner in toyota 045 white to get rid of the hideous two tone effect the white Monstaliner gave to my (now obviously not so) white land cruiser. You might check out Al's or Raptor also. monstaliner might be a bit difficult to spray, even in relatively low temp and low humidity I thinned it to the max and it seemed pretty thick still. Either way, 3M red scuff pad is what you need to scuff with for maximum adhesion, plastic can be cleaned with good old wax, far and adhesive remover.. sold at most walmarts and in bulk at a automotive finish store. if you want to mask something and get super crisp lines, go to a auto finish supply and pick up some 1/4 inch pinstripe masking, really good stuff, then you border that with some good 3m clean release, the 1/4 inch tape doesn't soften and tear from the monstaliner like the regular stuff does, I was able to peel mine 24 hours after without issue, though it would definitely have been easier to do as soon as the second coat was done.
