I have an 83 22r 4x4 solid axle 5speed truck that has an intermitent problem where either it will not start or shortly after starting it will start to back fire and die. Let it sit for a bit and it starts up and may run the rest of the day. I suspect some sort of electrical ignition module going bad but not sure where to start looking. Any ideas? When the truck runs it runs great. I just can't trust it to run consistently

When's the last time it got a tune-up? Check basics first, like timing, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Test the coil and ignitor.

When was the last time the carb was pulled off and rebuilt?

All new plugs rotor cap etc. When the truck runs it runs great. I might drive it for 5 days with not problem them I will get in it and go a mile down the road and it starts missing and back firing and will die. Wait a couple of min. and start it up and drive it the rest of the day with no problem??? How do you check the coil and ignitor? I am goning the the junk yard today to get a coil to try. The problem is intermitent and speratic. May happen when hot , cold or it will not start at all. Sounds like a bad ignitor. or coil to me but not sure how to verify....

Thanks for the reply

Dale

Yes, good places to start. Also...Fuel filter.

If it has been sitting for a while, perhaps try some dry gas.
