Hello, so i have a situation with my 1990 Toyota pickup extracab longed v6 4x4 automatic. I've had this truck for about 2 years and i love it and i don't want to give it up. However, my mecanic took apart the rear differential/3rd member because of the sound I was decribing and found that the pinon and ring are at there last moments. If I understood correctly the theeth on them are not doing the right torque and thats why it sounds the way it does.

I called Dr. Differential to see if they had the 3rd member for my truck but they sid that for that year that truck toyota changed the wideness of the ring to i think he said 1 1/4" instead of the normal 3/4" (might be backwards the information). I was reading an earlier thred about 4runners axel and it said that the axel was different for 1990 4runner and pickup because the 4runner on that year had coil springs iand the pickup doesn't (mine doesn't have spring).

I live in Puerto RicoI've called many salvage yards but they dont have pickups with my specifications but they do have 4runners.

My question is: what year and type of 4runner should I be looking for to fix the rear 3rd member of my pickup or change the entire rear axel of my pickup?
Specifications of my pick up: Toyota pickup 1990 v6 4x4 automatic, longbed, extracab

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!!

I am not sure if you say extracab in english....its basically a cabin and a half, longbed, 4X4, toyota pickup 1990, automatic.

Sounds like another victim of our US Regulations. Of course since the 4-door trucks in the rest of the world had those super short beds, to the rest of the world what we in the US think of as standard could be long by other standards.

Also, as 2ndGen said, any rear from 79-95 should work. Check your gear ratio and then do a little checking, I am sure you will find one around. You are not looking for the entire axle, they did change the suspensions between trucks and 4runners in that year as you mention, but you only need the removable 3rd member with the gears. That is interchangeable between the years mentioned above.

Thank you. So what your saying is that even if the axle is different the 3rd member will fit if the ratio is the same? The drunkards will seller the entire axe not just the 3 rd member. How will i know the ratio of the one am buying?

Correct, the differential will fit your axle, even if yours is leaf springs, and the 4Runner is coil springs. Sometimes the differential will have a paint color on the end of the pinion to tell you what gear ratio it is, if you can see the truck that it's coming out of, you can check the data plate to see what ratio it is. You can also turn the diff over and count the rotations to figure it out, but that can be a pain without some help.

Last, but most accurate, is to pull the diff out and count the teeth on the ring and pinion, and do the math.

There is only one potential difference on the newer differentials. If the replacement differential comes from a truck or 4runner that has rear wheel ABS brakes, it will have a hole for a sensor up on top. You can just cover the hole over if not needed.
