Sooo....

You didn't happen to end up with a non working 3b fan you don't want through all this did you...?

It's all yours. You just need to tighten the connection from spring to shaft. Maybe a small zap with a mig welder would do it... Oh, and I don't have a fan for it, so maybe not actually useful for you.

Well, I'm not particularly that happy with the NAPA hub. Turns on/off when it should, but just doesn't move the volume of air when it's on that I'd like it to. Simply doesn't cut it for towing. Probably not even as good as my old one was running 50% with the broken spring and low fluid. After hunting around (in vain) for a used 2lte hub, I decided instead just to repair mine.

I removed the spring with broken piece and just had it laser welded here at UVic...haha...nice to have friends in high places. Going to re-install the spring, tig weld it to the valve shaft. I'll then re-adjust the turn-on temp of the spring (test in hot water), refill with 15000CST oil, and re-install to the truck. Should be a pretty kick ass fan after the tweaks.

I'll also have Cam's old fan hub tig-welded to eliminate the play at the spring/shaft.

If you weld a spring, will it still have the same tension, or does that not kind of screw up the spring?

I had the same concerns, but the laser welding is a completely different ballgame. Barely effected the metal around the weld. Heat discolorization doesn't travel more than 1mm. The heat is so high, so fast, and in such a small area it doesn't actually heat up the part.

The tig weld in the center will be more challenging though...however that does seem to be how Toyota did it, as it was a weld I had to grind off there to remove the spring.

Just to follow up on this. After fixing the spring I did these mods to my clutch fan https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/blue-fan-clutch-mod.102633/ . Finally put the thing back in the LJ. And I must say I am VERY VERY happy. Thing kicks on at the perfect point, and moves some serious air. Coolant temps are rock solid now, A/C works way better, etc.
