Guys,
I've been converting the FJ40 for power steering, I'm stuck, I can't use the pitman arm that came with the 4runner steering box, it bumps into the bracket at the ends, so I was going to use the pitman arm off the manual steering box, got the bolt off but getting the arm off is becoming a labor in futility, I already broke a 3 arm puller. Does anybody have an Idea of how to get the arm off? I don't have a hydraulic press. Thanks

You need an actual pitman arm puller. The correct size is important, there are 3 different sizes that I know of. Even with the correct one, it works best in my experience to use an impact wrench. The cheapo brands don't cut it for this one!

I have taken off hundreds, and only about 4 or 5 that I can think of were bad enough to break something. Of those, only 1 would not come off after the CORRECT amount of heat. That one was taken off with an ESAB PCM 875 plasma cutter. And no it did not leak.

If you need help with it, let me know. I will be in the Springs sometime in the next week, or if it is very important to you, I am in Pueblo West and could do it tomorrow afternoon.

Guess I need a pitman arm puller...

Thanks for the info,
I've been looking and a pitman arm puller is what is needed, I will check around and see if anything is available if not guess I need to make a trip to Pueblo...:hhmm: Thanks again for the help.

Well, still stuck. Got the heavy duty pitman puller from NAPA, still can not get the arm out, put heat on it, impact wrench...no luck...think I need a hydraulic press or C4...decided to set everything else up and use the pitman arm from the 4runner just to get the pump primed (can't go to the ends), well...it's still pulling like there is no power steering, so I don't know what gives. Oh well done for today, FJ 1 me 0. :bang:

Roy, I have a 20 ton harbor frieght press. I will be coming back up to the academy sometime this week. Might be able to meet you somewhere in the springs too if you need it off sooner. let me know.

I played hell getting that pitman arm off of the 4runner box I sold you too. Thought I was gonna break my pitman arm puller. What I did was get that sucker bound up about as tight as you care to, then hit the puller with a hammer on the bolt. That usually frees them up for me.

Luke,
I'll give it a try, the shaft on the box is getting eaten up, but tapping on it might do the trick. If not might need to get together...

A 4 hour job....hahaha...who ever said that had a very optimistic view of this job...:bang:

Here is a pic of the 95% completed job....pitman arm from 4runner...

Luke,
I tried your method, it was a no go, were gona have to try the press. Let me know when it is most convenient for you. Thanks.

Have you been using the magic juice (PB Blaster)?

Oh I put the juice on it...I put 17.5 K of press juice on it.
We did some on the Job training here at the Academy Mechanical shop...put the box in a 40K press....took 17.5 K of lbs to pop it off. The project is back on :grinpimp:

I love the baby blue exhaust manifold

Yeah it's baby blue!! ;p...at least it's not "pink" or "salmon" for those more policaly correct types :princess: .

I think the "baby blue" gives me a little more horse power....just like "red" goes faster.....:flipoff2:

Well the conversion is done, I'm not sure how good the power steering is, I don't feel much of a difference, don't know if it's the power steering pump or the fact that the steering box is bigger and has little more leverage...is the power steering liquid within the pump suppose to be moving? It just sits there in mine, maybe my pump is not working? Any feedback??

I can always see the fluid moving inside my saginaw pump. Are you sure you have the lines in the right location? pressure line on the pressure port?

Do you get that pump howl when you turn all the way lock to lock, like the pump is straining? is the pump turning the right direction? It should howl like a Ford when you try to force it past lock. If you don't get the noise something is wrong. Just thoughts.

Houston we have a problem!! :crybaby:

Ok, 4 days, 2 pulleys, 2 pumps, 17K lbs of pressure on a pitman arm, power steering fluid all over the place...:o
I'm done, I changed out the pump, put a new pulley on it since it has to be pressed, and BAM! It's working like a champ! Thank a lot guys for all the advice.:steer:
