I had a 2001 LC which I just replaced with a 2006 LC. I am not sure how many here have had this problem yet, but I hear it is common for all LC's with Navigation Systems. I think I have found a solution for those that are interested.

I have noticed that the Anti-Glare coating (or whatever coating it is) on these Touch Screens rubs off or wears out wherever you touch it on a regular basis over time. I went through three (3) of these under warranty and it was due for a fourth one when I sold the vehicle.

This is a know problem and there is a tech bulletin from Toyota on this issue. Toyota will replace these under warranty or under a Toyota Platinum Care Warranty" at no charge. If you don't have one of these and this annoys you, as it id d me, you have a few options.

1 - Replace the old one with entire ECU which has a list price of around $6,800 and a dealer soct of around $5,400 I believe.

2 - Replace the old one with entire ECU which has a Toyota "Reconditioned" unit which I was quoted a price of $2,000 installed.

3 - Get a mild polish and wipe the rest of the Glare Coating off the screen so at least it all looks the same. However, I have noticed the spots that are worn are difficult to read when the sun is at a certain angle reflecting off the screen

4 - Do the above and replace with a screen protector with a built-in Anti-Glare coating. This helps a little, but still not great.

The best preventative solution is what I did with my new 2006 Land Cruiser. Within minutes of purchasing this vehicle, I took my favorite cleaner for LCD Screens which is a product called Monitor Lizard (it is truly the best) and I gently wiped the screen down with a super high quality microfiber which I purchase directly from the manufacturer (also the best I have found).

One the screen was clean, I install a great product made by Screen Patronus - http://www.screenpatronus.com/ -

Basically, this is a PDA style cling type screen protector that cost around $10. It is perfectly cut to fit the LC Screen and it is easy to install...even I could do it. I can honestly say it is the only work or modification I have ever performed on a vehicle I own...so you know it must be easy.

The fit was exact...and I got it installed with a perfect 1/16 or 1/32 or so border gap around the entire edge of the screen.

Now, I see fingerprints and oils from touching the screen on the protector, and I just wipe them off with a microfiber. I don't even use the Monitor Lizard solution in most cases.

Anyway, for what it is worth, I thought I would pst this for those that mey be interested.

Thanks for the info. Just ordered the screen protector. Is Monitor Lizzard mail-order or can you get it at say a Best Buy or Office Depot type place?

As a side note, I keep my vehicles a long time and have always been concerned about the longevity of the NAV unit (since its basically a forced option). At least reconditioned units are available, because I would have a heart attack paying 5,400 for a replacement. Hopefully, the NAV will last 200K miles, but not holding my breath.

I just got one too.

Sounds like a good way to avoid a big PITA.

Monitor Lizard and the really good MicroFiber Cloths are only available online from:

http://www.leproducts.com/monitor_lizard_faq.html

Klear Screen or iKlear and their MicroFiber Cloths are also superb.

http://www.klearscreen.com/
or
http://www.theistore.com/iklear.html

You can buy Klear Screen / iKlear (basically the same product) from Fry's and Apple Stores.

However, do not let these products freeze. You can pretty much toss it out after that because it will no longer work properly ... even though they may appear to work fine...they will not perform as they should.

Also, only use a brand new clean microfiber for the screen. You can use it several times but once you wash it, it is a no acceptable for use on optics and screens. It is basically a nice rag at that point.

I would buy the Klear Creen

i got one of these from someone on ebay and had a hell of time trying to get it on there. wound up ruining it and throwing it away.

so i just bought the cleaner, cloth and another nav screen protector. any advice on how to get it on there properly with no air bubbles or overlap??????

probably just patience.....

Not sure which one you purchased...but the one from Screen Patronus went on perfect and easily. I simply peeled off the backing about halfway, carefully aligned it on the screen, and used a credit card like as a squeegee to smooth it on the screen. You absolutely cannot tell it is there if you do it right.
