Hey guys, trying to find the right NAV update DVD for a 2009 LX. Has anyone picked one up recently that worked? Not having much luck finding one that seems specific to the 570

I didn’t think that matter between the LC and LX. It does matter in 2008-2009 are one generation and 2010-2011 are another generation. Then you have the 2013+ that actually cost a ton to update.

I just got the newest release for $16 on Amazon. I might be one of the few that uses the heck out of my navigation so that is pretty cheap to update regularly.

@Taco2Cruiser - what year is Rocklander? I'm looking for an update for the 2014 year and it seems to be hard to locate that specific version on amazon (or elswhere).
Mine is a 2011. That was the last year for cheap DVD copies to use.

I’ve looked into 2013+ SD card navigation but from what I’ve read, it’s dealer only thing. I’m sure it can be figured out (maybe a blend of tech stream and copied SD cards), but until that happens, it is hundreds of dollars to update each year on 2013+.

Got a link for the one you ordered??

Well the one I ordered won’t work for yours. I have gen 6 (2010-2011 models and all of North America is one one disk). You have gen 5 (2008-2009 models and east and west NA is split between two disks).

So here was a quick search, the newest I could find was the 2017 version. But always search “2009 Land Cruiser DVD update” and then make sure in the description is says 2008-2009. Then look for last year. Toyota releases 2018, November 2018 for 2019. So the upcoming November, 2019 will release for 2020. And so on.

Just a note on older Nav “updates... “

If you have an 09 (I have an 08)... don’t expect any performance or interface “newness.” It will still be the same clunky, pre-tablet-days interface you’re used to... I don’t mean to poo-poo updating, but before spending any kind of serious $... just know it’s still going to feel and look the same...which could be disappointing if expecting more. I did update mine, but frankly noticed no significant change at all.

On the happy side...I keep my screen OFF by default and sincerely enjoy the beautiful screen of my iPad...which turns my stock screen into just a very useful controller for AC, and other momentary stuff. All good!

I updated mine 2 years ago and attempted to see if the update was worth it one trip, turned it off within the first 15 min. We have to have one of the worst Navs on the market. I just use my phone now and don’t even turn that dinosaur on. It’s a good back up to the phone and iPad if it ever came to it.

I think it’s funny how we all view things so differently. It’s fascinating to me.

OP has an LX. There is a BIG difference between the LX and the LC when it comes to updating the nav for the 08-11 models. The LX doesn't use a disc for updating. You need to go to the dealer and have them upload the updates for $$$. I found this out after I bought a disc online and found out I couldn't use it. Personally I like using the built in nav system as I don't really like fiddling with my phone while I'm driving.

I'm a volunteer fireman, so I really just want to have a quick place to glance to see street names without messing with a phone, but you are right, trying to use it as a navigation system is very painful.

I ordered a DVD off of amazon so we will see what happens. I cant believe you have to choose the East or West region :)

Crap.. Is there no way to do it without the dealer? There is no way I'm paying 300 bucks for that

I think it's actually the low $200s for some reason.

Agreed, for street names it’s fine. But if I put in a destination that I know how to get to, it routes me in the weirdest convoluted way that I know isn’t a good way. Yeah it’ll get me to where I need to be but if I compare it to the iPad or phone they are so far apart in technology. I like the Toyota as a fail safe or if there is poor cell service, and for me that is extremely rare. That’s the only real reason I keep it updated.

My 2011 LC DVD for year 2015 was 175 bucks from toyotaparts.com.

At dealer today getting maintenance done in preparation for LCDC and asked the parts counter about the update card or disc for the 2014 year model. Based on the system here in SoCal, there isn't an update available... Anyone else run into this?

I'm assuming your 2014 is the same as my 2013.

If so, there is in fact no card or disc for the 2014 model year - there never was.

The only way to update the NAV system - both system and map content - is to purchase an update code from the Parts Dept and have the techs use that code - together with a special dongle the dealership must purchase and Techstraem - to effect the update.

I don't doubt your dealership said what you say they said, but I don't think they were giving you the whole story. Update codes are available, but whether your dealership has the appropriate dongle AND is willing to do the work is another question. If they do decide to do the work, it will be expensive - my update in 2015 was around US$300 (and had no noticeable effect on system speed, features, or content - even though a new system version was observed).

My advice is not to update the NAV, but get a nice outboard standalone Garmin GPS unit - have you seen the Overlander? Garmin Overlander GPS. Map and system updates are free for life and easy to do by yourself.

HTH

To echo what’s been said, speed and look of the update doesn’t change. Just updating the road changes. When I lived in Savannah, one of my updates added the entire new highway system which was nice.

But I paid $11 for an eBay disk. 2008-2011 get cheap and easy map updates.

If anyone wants 2017 map update and has a 2010-2011. You can have my old disk, I’ve updated to 2019 data ($16 amazon, that’s not to rub it in, far from it, just helping maybe someone not spend more than they need to)
