NATO Surplus Jerry Cans

I just found this place and ordered 4 of there 5 gallon cans. Cheaper than DS (they are used tho) Shipping was cheaper than me driving my 80 to New West as well.

I was going to go there but I saved a bundle getting them as Army Surplus and not new. I still plan to go to Daves to get a fill neck and a water can or two.

What about calling Dave's Surplus for a Club 'group buy' on new yellow collared diesel ones ?? I will be looking for blue Scepter water container for Canyonlands next year.

These jerry cans are dual fuel capable, meaning they're not only for gas or diesel. The red and yellow collars are simply to let use know what type of fuel is in them. Maybe there is a source for the tags alone?

I'd also be into a blue water canister.

You can purchase the tags from Dave's as well, I think most of the tanks sold are red collared, Dave's has the yellow collars hanging on the wall. When I switched from diesel to gas I got the appropriate collar to math the tanks.

Yeah I will be headed to Dave's for Collars and fill spouts, I also need to get a couple water cans. I'll post some pics when they arrive, service has been good they shipped 2 hours after I ordered. Shipping was $15 for all 4.

Yeah I did not talk to them, I selected the slower shipping and it shows a ETD of next Monday.

Look for small abrasion dents from sitting in the fuel carriers when full. I have a few spots worn in like that on mine, but that is after about 35,000 km.

I have a concern about the poly cans expanding in extremely high heat situations. All I've used is the steel NATO ones with the old style cap and they were great, no expansion at all, which means no worries about retightening or loosening straps when it's on your roof.

Anyone have experience with this?

They expand a small amount usually from filling them at sea level then going up 6,000 feet rather than from thermal expansion. I have a fuel rack so they never get loose or cause any problems that way . I like them because they don't clang and bang around like steel ones and no inside coating to start falling out.. I have had the European steel NATO cans which actually are easier to open and close than the plastic ones, but they are steel and can dent. The plastic ones you can hit with a hammer - no dents and grinding sparks don't seem to mark them. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Last year during our Mc Kenzie trip i had 3 brand new poly NATO cans on my roof rack in full sun and +/- 30 celsius, filled with gas. They bulged a lot from the heat expansion but never leaked a drop of gas. Next time i will prevent this from happening because the sight of bulged tanks on your roof rack makes you feel a bit "uncomfortable".
These cans seem very strong. There must be a good reason why the military is using them in cold and heat with either diesel or gas. I was very impressed.

I'm not worried about the durability or strength of the cans at all. If the military is using them all over the world in every consevable condition they will handle my 90% web wheeling 10% real wheeling just fine.

I have a metal septer can and althought it's nice and robust I do not think it will last as long as the poly ones.

I have used the septer spout and it's well worth the investment.

Another thing I plan on getting is a lid wrench from Metal tech.

FYI. The spouts for the old style steel nato cans works with the plastic scepter cans. They have the same ID. Found my steel spout (aka. donkey d!ck) for $10 at a flea market. Works fine .

Received the 3 used cans today. Used being the key word. Was 1 week tot he day.

They were each in a garbage bag and collectively wrapped in cellophane. Yellow collars so assume diesel. Will want to purge the contents and prob get red ones from Daves Surplus. I took a few pics and will post those tonight or tomorrow. No damage, no abrasion marks. Looks like UV fade areas for the most part, but still a good deal for what it is.
