One thing to consider if you are putting gas in non gas cans (RED color) is that the CHP is issuing tickets for this, and is a reason to conduct a traffic stop if they suspect your cans have gas in Non-CARB and/or red color cans!

This started earlier this year for the motorcycle racers leaving races here in SoCal. Some had warnings, others tickets. Just a heads up.

Are you saying that the red cans are not to be used for gasoline?

So, what has CHP been doing with gas in '40s vintage jerry cans? Yes, all mine have date stamps from the late '40s. They should all be grandfathered.

I figure the best thing to do is keep them covered up on the truck.

The CHP is looking for new style plastic cans, especially plastic cans that are not red in color. My CHP neighbor said there is a law requiring that all portable storage devices (cans) being used with gasoline be only red in color, yellow for diesel, etc, etc,. As to CARB, this only applies to new cans and cans made after the rule went into affect. Old, pre-CARB rule cans be still be used, as long as they are red for gas. Plastic cans have a date stamp molded into them and a code for material they are intended to carry which the CHP uses to determine if a ticket is warranted.

Here in SoCal, the CHP has been stopping and citing drivers for gas can violations. This has been happening around the Johnson Valley/Victorville and Mojave areas. This has been discussed many times this year on motorcycle and off road racing web sites.

The jest is that when the CHP see's cans with spouts, or cans that look like they are being used to store and transport gas, and they are not red in color, this is probable cause to stop the vehicle.

From the discussion, it is $165.00 + costs ticket, but the cop has the option to have the can and contents handled as hazardous materials, and all costs involved are assessed to the driver!

This is all about revenue.

I am just pointing this out to people as this is happening.

Thank God I got out of The People's Republic of Kalifornia back in 1973. But I don't know where I would go if Colorado went the way of Kalifornia. By the way I went with Deutsche Optik for cans.

If it was on the internet, it must be true!

CHP is solely funded through vehicle registration fees. Neither the CHP officer nor his Sergeant care AT ALL about ticket generated revenue. Period. This is always what people whine about when they get caught and get a ticket- that it must be a quota, or revenue based. Couldn't possibly be that they were actually speeding!

Maybe in socal they have learned that it's a problem for some reason, but not up here.
