Check with LandCruiserJunky (new on the board) about the Q-jet I built him that is pulling 21" manifold vacuum at idle on his SBC powered FJ40 DD.

Holley 2bbls are balls out fast for the street, but they dissapoint me off road, and I can't stand the fact that they are so sensitive to hiccups. Never seen a 6cyl cruiser that didn't hiccup once in a while and it only takes one hiccup to kill a holley. Since Holley is the only real choice for the Offy, I wouldn't use any of it if you plan to spend any serious time in the rocks.

P.S. After a little cleaning at East Lake on the Ershim Trail, my Aisan was idling with 17" of vacuum at 9000' elevation. I doubt you would get that out of ANY aftermarket carb.

I really, really dont agree with you on this. There are many people running hollies off road with no issues. And I am sure there are many people running edlebrocks with the same success as there are people running Q jets with success.

Sounds to me you made a statement about somthing you dont know much about; Hollies. Just cuz I dont know crap about Q jets does not make me say they wont work off road, they will. As will Hollies as will all hi end aftm carbs with enough dicking with. Q jets and edlebrocks both require dicking with to run right off road. Dont make it seem like Hollies are the bastard children.

Drive my 40 off road or my buddy chases 60

dd113, what cfm rating Holley are you running on your 2F? is it a 390 or one of the larger 600 cfm ones.
I'm with you on this one, I think a carb that's had the bugs worked out will work, no matter if it's a weber, aisan, holley, qjet, carter or whatever. As for the Offy manifold being junk, ::) you're entitled to your opinion, I guess...
Offys are no worse at low rpm than the stock manifold, but being that we're talking about trucks driven to the trailhead, (not trailered) a motor that will spin 3000-3500 rpm WILL benefit from better flow at the higher rpms. I don't want to reengineer the 2F into a street motor at all, just squeeze what horses I can out of mine with the stuff I got in the garage already. I got buddies with Heeps, and they squeeze the f*&%n last bit of power out of a motor not that different from mine and yours. The Heeps with an I6 258 inch and carbs can be made to work nicely both on the trail and as DDs, I know cause I ride in them shotgun from time to time and theys got balls. And what I'm trying to do is much the same, only with the 2F, also a 258 inch I6 with a carb.

Well maybe I was a bit harsh with the POS Offy and all...heck I have an Offy 360 on a 289 hipo myself. If you have all the stuff laying around put it on..and by all means trust the math you did above calc'ing the flow....if you over carb it you will loose low end grunt, response, torq etc...and the 300cfm figure may be being kind based on the efficiency of F moving air.
Advent horizon, I found that Mr Gasket makes an adapter to go from squarebore pattern (in Offy) to Qjet. I may be wrong, but it looks right.
Yes, BUT, you lose all the advantages of the dual plane design for two reasons:
1. The adapter is open plenum
2. In order to fit around the brake booster, you have to mount the carb sideways.

I'm sure you could have an adapter machined up to fit without an open plenum, and mount a smaller brake system to get it to work, but it just seems like waaay too much effort/cost.

If your interest in the Offy is based on higher rpm flows, consider rounding up a stock intake from a 68 or early 69 FJ. They have larger manifold runners than the new ones.

As far as the Holley thing goes,I never claimed to be an authority. My statements were based on the following observations:
1. Ran with a SBC group for 10 years, and almost every guy in that club had the same cookie-cutter story. Had problems with the stock Q-Jet; pulled it for a Holley. Got tired of float/vent/power valve issues with the Holley and put on a Carter. A year later, they all had spare Holleys and Carters and the Q-Jets were back on the truck!
2. My buddy who swore by the Holley (now doesn't even own a 6 banger)rebuilt and stabbed on my rig when I wasn't looking. Ran great for 3 days til it hiccup-ed and blew the power valve.
3. I have had many other people confirm this power valve problem.
4. Downey Off Road, who has championed the Holley for years tells me that Holley now makes float baffles, vent tube extensions and better power valves. If they keep it up, they might get it to do everything an Aisan can do right out of the box!

Aisan is my only real bias. I have now modified the Q-Jet on my SBC to make it more like an Aisan!

The issues with Hollies are very well known. The info Downey gave you makes it seem like they came up with it or it is "new on the market" All that crap has been around for years.
