Mystery speedometer driven gear

I am helping my brother diagnose a non-working speedometer in his recently acquired 1982 pickup. The truck has a 22R, swapped in L52 5 speed and not really sure which gear case, but I am assuming it’s the OEM ‘82 gear case. We live about 2000 miles apart so I can’t easily crawl around the truck to get all the info I want.

I had him check the integrity of the speedo cable first and what do you know… it wasn’t even hooked up. I had him install the cable and take it for a test drive. Still not working. I advised him to pull the speedometer driven gear and he sends me a pic of it. It’s definitely bad.

I noticed something weird about it though. 7x20?

I thought all 79-95 gear cases had a 6 tooth drive gear? I thought should have a 6x18-20 gear for his transfer case, but this odd ball was installed.

What the heck had a 7x20 gear? A quick google shows a Toyota Dyna or Toyoace. I don’t know anything about those trucks. Could they possibly share the same transfer case that would bolt behind a L52? I need to get some clear pics of the transfer case and do some research. I’m sort of worried if I recommend a 6x18-20 driven gear, there might actually be a 7 tooth drive gear in there.

I read this thread for more info but didn’t see anything regarding 7x20 driven gears.

I just regeared from 4.30 to 4.10, so obviously my speedometer is 2mph off. What I do know is, I have a 20 teeth speedometer gear and I will need a 19 teeth one to match my axle ratio and tires. I looked through the parts catalog and see that the VZN85 uses a 19 teeth speedo gear. Does this fit on all the other runners (that has an automatic) of the same era regardless of engine? I thought about using a 18 teeth also, but that'll make the speedo slightly fast. I don't want that! Anyhow, if the speedo gears in the 90-95 mini truck/runners mix and match, does anyone know where I can find...

I've had the T-cases apart and I've had the gear you're showing in and out but, I've never changed ratios. I just checked the old Pirate Toyota bible for info and couldn't find anything regarding speedo gears.

My son had a gear in one of his trucks come out looking like yours and it was because it was not compatible with the drive gear inside. I think the PO tried to correct the speedo by swapping in the chewed up gear we pulled out. Maybe the PO of your brother's truck did the same??

We ended up just putting a matched set in from a spare case we had. It was the factory speedo gears but my son had 5.29's and 35's so the speedo was close.

Good luck with it. Please post up what you find as far as the proper parts. Like, can you just swap the gear on the cable end only. Or do you have to swap in a matched set.

EDIT: I just asked AI if both gears had to be changed on an RF1A T-case and it said just the plastic driven gear but there are only a few limited gear tooth options. Or it will chew up the gear.
