Don't know anyone going. Sorry.

They are going to have a fund raiser (for save Tellico) at Crawfords camp instead. I guess everyone will bring their rigs and play in the rock garden.

Nolen...

Not that simple, nor a no brainer... Windrock was considered by UC and rejected for various reasons, not the least of which is WR's inability to cater to events. They wanted their typical fees with no break for the event...

At this point, there's a chance (albeit small) that Tellico will be open in June. We're pursuing legal action and hope to prove that the USFS violated their own rules and those of the NEPA process and thus the temporary closure is not warranted.

If Tellico is open then GSMTR proceeds as it always has, if its closed then GSMTR becomes a 3 day fundraising event for Rescue Tellico. Could UC have moved the event? Sure, there are a few options. However Roger and I (and others) urged them to keep the event at Crawfords to help prove to the USFS that we're not going anywhere anytime soon. I realize its a long drive from Jackson, but I'd like to think that ya'll like Tellico enough to come and show some support to the folks leading the fight to keep the area open. If you can't make it, but would've come to GSMTR had the area been open, I urge you to donate at least portion of the money you would've spent to Rescue Tellico. The legal fight will nether be short nor inexpensive.

The thing to remember is that Tellico is a test case for the Clean Water Act...If the SELC and TU are successful here then thats a precedent that they WILL use on not only public lands, but private as well...just ask Wooly's and Wheelin in the Country here in TN how the bu-bu-but, its PRIVATE land argument worked out for them.

/gets down off the soapbox...
//headed to Crawford's in 15 mins for the Spring Fling Tellico fundraiser...

The outcome of this case will be a biggy for other (past, present and future) law suits and closings around the country, not just in TN.

I really found it interesting that the independent study by SFWDA indicated the sedimentation present in the watershed was likely due to improper logging practices.

"Historic clear-cutting of land in Upper Tellico has contributed more
to the off-site sediment transport than the trail system."

:bang:

I wonder who was doing the logging...

Sorry Todd, I did not mean to offend, but I still think keeping GSMTR at Tellico is a losing proposition for 2009. I understand your reasoning, I just don't think it will work.

Maybe GSMTR should die with Tellico like the Roundup will die with Katemcy.

Name it something else and head to Windrock.

As for fees, make the wheelers pay Windrock their fees and set a fee for the event like LSLC does.

No offense taken at all. And I agree that having GSMTR at Tellico isn't the best idea, if wheeling were the most important aspect of the event. But for this year I think its important to show folks that we aren't backing down. You've got to admit that alot of what makes GSMTR, GSMTR, is the people gathered around the fire and seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Is one year without the trails open, in the grand scheme, really that big a deal? Also, we're working on some options for wheeling. There's Beasley Knob for the wagons and near stockers, and Little Buffalo for the hard core rigs. UC is also planning some other good stuff.

As to the issue of windrock, its just not that good a deal anymore. Its $17 per person per day, IIRC, and remember that's per person, not rig...they also don't discount riders/children.

Anyway, I certainly see where you're coming from, and to a point, I even agree, I just think that for this year, actual wheeling should take a back seat to the goal of getting Tellico reopened and keeping it opened. Next year is an entirely different story...altogether...
