While the decreased performance you note is certainly true (I notice the same with my 285/70-17's compared to stock), I would suggest it is more due to the increased diameter of the tire than the weight.

HTH
I think gaijin is correct. Since I elected to install P-Metric Toyo AT2 in the 285/70-17 size my radius went up but the overall weight is within a pound of the OEM 18" set. Small impact on acceleration, negligible difference in braking effectiveness and perhaps one MPG hit on fuel. Noise up slightly. Everything matches anticipation. You can simulate the acceleration impact by selecting 2nd gear start.

My other car the FJ Cruiser feels like a dog with the 285/75r16 (57 lb tires) and the trailer on the back. It's always downshifting and hunting for gears... Horrible, just horrible. But it's a smaller engine... Even with out the trailer going up a hill it's a hunting for gears all the time... In 4lo it's fine :) It's almost torture going on road trips with the FJ tiny tiny tiny car

I run the same tire size as you on my FJ. I haven't towed a trailer, but have had no problem holding gear or needing more power in my exploration of Colorado and its mountain roads and highways. Mine is an '08 so I have the earlier 4.0 engine with the ACIS. That was discontinued when the engine was updated in 2010, and even though the engine HP ratings went up, the real world results were the loss of umph for acceleration in the 2010 and up FJs. There was additional smog equipment and ECU mapping that happened in 2013 and up FJs that further complicated matters.

Someone posted that the FJ 3.90 gears are part of the problem. Well, unless you have a manual transmission FJ, you actually have 3.72 gears. The 3.90 gears only came with the 6 speed manual and actually help with the larger tires. Mine is an auto so I've got the 3.72 gears.

If your FJ is an auto (and thus the 3.72 gears) and you still want to tow with it, you can do a gear swap pretty readily and easily.

That's why running 35s on stock gears and claiming it is fine and dandy is a bunch of rubbish.

Thanks for sharing. Might consider these when they start to make some steamrollers avail.

Tire has no perceptible increased noise levels over the stock Bridgestones.

The increased sidewall stiffness actually helps the car around town, especially when its loaded up with toys.

So far so good.

Overlake, did you re-gear your rig?

Hi all thought I would post my new pics of the KO2's!!! Running at 40psi. I wanted the 275/70r18 size but they are not coming out until march and we needed some tires to get us through winter. As far as on road goes they are really quite, can barely hear them on the freeway or in the city. Ride is nice just a tad bit stiffer but really not bad at all. I haven't been able to hit any trails but we mostly do mild to moderate trails only. Full size spare fits no problems at all

The SUV will pretty much stay stock. I took out the back seats, put in the dvd override system, and have the slee sliders on order, putting them on next week... After that I should be done

Hello, any rubbing at all on the 285/65/18 setup? Is your suspension stock? thx!

I have 285/65R18 KO2, E-rated on my '21 Heritage Edition. Stock suspension. No rubbing. Close on full lock but no rubbing. Maybe 3/16th inch clearance at the closest. I have not heard any rubbing with moderate off-roading on class 3, out of class 5, trails. No issues. I did loosen the mounting screws and move the plastic parts as far away from the tires when first installed and really tightened the mounting screws to keep them from moving. Due to the Slee skids, I also zip-tied one plastic part on the passenger side away from the tire to keep it from flopping around.
