Its a pain in the butt. I really need 3 feet to drive with thigs like this. It runs fine while its cold. and it takes like 5 min to get the thing restarted if I let it die at a stop. I've checked the heater/flapper on the exaust manifold, and it moves, I tried adjusting the carb, but that got me a super high idle speed. I dont know what else could cause this. Any ideas? BTW its a 73 with stock carb.

TIA
Dave

sounds like carb issues. Sounds like it's getting to much gas at idle or not enough. Did this just start recently? Did you do any maintenance or adjusments before this started?

Choke seems to work fine. It started when I adjusted my idle speed down to normal levels. I bought this not too long back and hadnt gotten to that yet. I think the PO had the problem and just ran the idle speed up.

As long as there is no risk of backfiring, try looking down the barrel of the carb when it is idling to see if you can see gas dribbling or spraying out of the venturi.

Dribbling gas at an idle is the symptom of a problem.

Could be that there is not enough gas to sustain the idle circuit in the carb, or a restriction in the idle circuit. You could try adjusting the idle mixture screw (on the side facing the valve cover).

A vacuum guage and vacuum readings would be helpful in further diagnostic advise.

ok went outside started it up and looked in the carb. It isnt atomising the gas as well at idle as it does above that, but I'm not sure I'd say it was dribbling out either. For the heck of it, I let it run till it got hot. No problems there. I covered the carb with my hand to reduce the air flow, and it speeded up, but if I closed it off completely, it died. Then I used the acelerator pump to add a bit of gas to the carb. I managed to do it with out moving any other linkages. It responded by speeding up. I took the hose to the break booster loose. I kinda stumbled a bit but continued to run. It did seem to be idling fast again. I have been playing with the idle adjustment a bit, so I might have left it fast. I'm going to go into town and buy a vacumm gauge and see what that says. What should I be looking for?

Solenoid hooked up properly?

Usually disconnecting the booster will kill the motor, INSTANTLY! Too much air, not enough vacuum, not enough gas for all that extra air.

One thought- too much gas (as in the dribbling when there shouldn't be any gas at all) might balance out the excess air from the disconnected booster, in some rudimentary form. How does the motor run with your finger over the booster hose?

Solinoid is good. Pullled the wire when idling cold, and the engine quits. I didnt pull the booster hose quickly. I pulled it slowly so it wouldnt get a gulp of air. The motor runs fine with my finger over the booster port. I took it into town and when it died at one stop light, when I tried to restart it, I had the choke out, and the gas on the floor, and it backfired. I'm guessing too much gas in the muffller, and it self ignited? Oh I picked up a vacume gauge. What do I look for??

Here's a place to start when looking at vacuum. But why don't you tell us what you find. The really good guys (like Mark) can get even more out of a vacuum gauge.
