I'm new here looking for help-
My 1985 Toyota SR5 Xcab Pickup that I've owned since it had 5 miles on it, had issues today with the 22REC engine that has been smoking a bit lately and using a lot more gas than I think it should.(seemed to quit leaking oil and just burn it instead).
Today we got a very wet snow fall of maybe 4"-6" and while driving out to my shed/shop to work on a trailer I'm rebuilding the toyota seemed bogged down a bit and needed about full throttle in 4th to go 50-55 and I was trying to stay off the deep slush in the roads.
When I got there I pulled up to talk to a friend and after we drove apart I smelled antifreeze.
A few hours later I had to move it to load stuff for my girlfriend and later I was checking the oil and saw moisture under the hood above the overflow bottle so I looked into the rad and saw only the tops of the cooling fins and no coolant??? :doh:,:censor:!!!
I then pulled the dipstick to check the oil and saw the tell-tail signs of coolant and oil mix of gray gunk.., :censor:,:censor:,:mad:,:crybaby:,:confused:
I need oil so I pulled the cap off and saw the same gray under it also!:censor:
I added the oil and desided to let it sit and ride back to town with my sweetie and research the possible causes of coolant and oil mixing???
This engine is stock and has only had the front main seal replaced and is at about 185K miles.
I hope its only the head gasket because it was running and don't think it busted thru in the block any place.
Yes my bed sides are about rusted gone, I painted the thing complete in 96 and because I use my truck and the body and frame get twisted around in the Rocky's, it breaks the stupid seal that was between the lower and upper bed sides on the early year models.

:censor:, drivers side hub has been an issue since the stock auto hubs failed and mechanic missed the clip that holds it all together and the thing has gone thru a hub on that side only about every two years.:mad:,:censor:

Sounds like timing chain guides broke.

Happened to my '86 22R.

Basically; the stock plastic timing chain guides get brittle and break after a long time (300k miles in my case) and allow the timing chain to eat through the tensioner as well as the side of the timing chain cover... right where your WATER PUMP housing is :x

This gives a direct leak of coolant into your oil pan, and gives you the same symptoms.

You're really looking at three options now; fixing the timing cover and replacing chain guides and praying your crankshaft bearings aren't tarnished, getting a new engine, or rebuilding yours.

I chose to rebuild mine.

Still in the process of it.

Suckage man :/

I don't remember the timing chain but that doesn't mean I haven't replaced it or maybe it got new guides when the front seal was replaced. The mid 90's are a bit fuzzy. In 95, I had a 84 2-wheel company truck I sold to a great customer and part of the deal was him helping me with the front main seal and I mostly chased beer and parts while he fixed it. I had a 95 SR5 Tacoma with the larger V6 as my company truck for about two years back then. I really wanted to keep the 2-wheeler because it was scary quick with the 22R, 4 speed and no wieght. But the money man of my paint store, (wifes dad), said how many trucks do you need?? One must go.
My 85 has been a pretty great truck and I really need it to last three more years, so I can get X # two paid off, (youngest son turns 18 in three years and one month, one week),{yea after getting the first one paid off,(payments from 87 to 2002, enough for a new truck payment every month) I do keep track of the time left in poverty hell}. I don't have any other wheels and do have to work for the payments and a little food money! Would have been cheaper to shoot!

Soooo, your answer would beeee....??? :flipoff2: <mud welcome! :D

#1: Welcome!

#2: sell me the truck :D , not to be a schmuck but you dont sound too confident of what you own, if you did...

#3: it still runs, your options are numinous, it will last longer once you REwhatever it than any thing you could get payments forever with tomorrow!

Head job, rebuild, replace TC and cover.....

You can only wish you had my truck, I'm the only person thats ever driven it in going on 23 years now, I will repair it and maybe ever my 85 4-runner while I'm getting my hands that dirty.
Once I have my x's done, I'll get back to my 1970 Blazer. Thats one that even the Toys can't touch!

Jerod-
Sell my Toy, Like thats ever going to happen,,.. LOL!
That would be like selling my K5, Never!
The 4-runner was given to me this spring and as I understand it only needs a head gsk.
But a few weeks back when my starter didn't want to and I grabbed the one from the runner I saw the runners alt isn't hooked up but just sitting in the bat tray. I really need to take a better look at that rig.
Its starter didn't want to either, so I pulled apart mine and saw as I figured, that the contact under the noid from the pos wire was eaten away again. I had the real contact in my tool box from the last time this happened about 5-6 back and being on a Sunday I had just made a contact from copper wire connections and bought the real one the next day. Just never had to desire to pull it out and change it out, heck the life span I got from the home made part was pretty good!! I spotted an extra one while looking for the real one and I'll put it into the runners starter someday. I'd better check the alts brushes while its out. If only time wasn't so hard to come by! And the fricken SNOW,!!!
My 85's been thru Nashville while that place was closed down completely, I mean totally, Interstate shut down and people leaving there cars and trucks just sitting in the middle of the road,!! Just from a little tiny bit of snow on the road!! Like about a fourth of the amount we got here yesterday,,.. LOFAO!!! I even had a cop spot to talk to me when gassing up to ask me to please not power slide that much around corners, He said that from seeing my plate he knew I wasn't out of control but that the locals don't know how to drive in this weather and I might scare them! LOL! I told him I'm just passing thru and would be a bit mellower if I see anybody else out in the 2" blizzard of Feb 88. I hope they got a snow plow by now!lol!

Could be head gasket as well. It doesn't matter you'd better get that valve cover off and see if the guides are broken. When I first did this it was very obvious so you shouldn't have a hard time being able to tell if they are broken. I think it's the driver side guide that usually breaks. If one of them is broken get a new head gasket kit, timing kit, gaskets etc. Not the funnest job but put related bolts and brackets into baggies and label them and like I wish I had done take some pics as you go and it will make the replacement easier. I also had an old timing cover around and I used it to stick my bolts in to so I knew exactly where each bolt went because it seems like they are all a different size.

Well,
I hope you guys are right, and
"timing chain guides broke.
the timing chain to eat through the tensioner as well as the side of the timing chain cover."
I haven't had a chance to pull the valve cover and look yet but I found a great deal on a fix-it
parts kit on E-gay so I ordered it and should be in Friday.
Parts in the kit:
* 1 Timing Chain
* 1 Timing Cover
* 2 Timing Guides (Left and Right)
* 1 Cam Gear
* 1 Crank Gear
* 1 Timing Cover Gasket & Seal
* 1 Tensioner (Made from Japan)
I see the kit isn't complete but for less than $50. it's not so bad.
I guess I'll need also:
Valve cover Gskt
water pump Gskt
Oil pump O-ring
Oil Pan Gskt
And the usual oil, filter and Antifreeze
Plus the cleaning stuff that I don't have in stock, (like the oil filter, new belts ect,)
After reading the instructions listed here, I remember that hidden bolt, I don't remember when or why, but that didn't surprise me?
I really should dig into my file system and review the replaced parts I've bought over the years.

Anyway Thanks for the help!!!
:)
