I ran into a guy today at Canuck Tire with a mint 74 Fj 40 that used to be owned by an Esquimalt school teacher. The teacher had the 40 completly redone by the shop class and then stored it for the last 10 years. I talked to him a few times about selling but he wasn't interested but it seems he changed his mind and this fellow bought it. He ask me what is the easiest way to raise the gear ratio for highway use as he won't be taking it off road. It has a 350 in it with stock 3 speed and 3 speed t/case. He says he was told it has 3.70 diff gears in it but hasn't checked it yet. The easiest i guess is to put bigger tires like 33's on it. I looked up the ratio for high gear in the 4 speed trans and transfer and it seems to be almost identical so nothing gained there. The 5 speed 5th gear i guess is higher but is a lot more work.
