Most all exhausts on turboed cruisers will be fairly quiet. Anybody have sound clips of their naturally aspirated exhaust?

Actually turboed cruisers are not that quiet with the wrong muffler. Go ahead ask me how I know. So first I had the Man-A-Fre system that went under the rail. It was actually installed for a week. It had a cylindrical muffler that made it sound like one of those obnoxious Honda kids cars. I sent It back since I did not know when they installed it that it went under the frame for Kalifonia emmisions reasons. Next I had a local shop build a new 3" system from the turbo down pipe back with a single Walker tubo max in it. Then it was quieter but when on the highway at 70 MPH it had a noticable exhuast note that was cool for about one minute and then left me wanting the stock sound level back. So back to the exhuast shop and one more Walker turbo max muffler in the tail section and happiness. About the only thing you hear now is turbo whine and the stereo.

Did Monte say he has a turbo? for that matter, did Mark B.? I ask because I'm not sure why you would want to go to a 3" system on a NA 3F. You might lose some torque because of the loos of back pressure. AFAIK there is every reason to go big diam with a turbo but little to none to do it with a NA engine. I'd stick with the stock diam. What is the Borla size? Is it still available?

Does any one know of any round (not oval) mufflers that are 6"-7" or less in diameter that actually quiet alot?

Rear resonator

Sorry if this is a slight highjack of the thread.....are any of you planning on reinstalling the oem resonator (small muffler) back into your system? This is primarily for "whistle" reduction. I was trying to figure out how I can have a muffler shop re-attach the resonator in a position that's toward the front of the vehicle (sort of closer to the frame cross member that runs above the rear axle).

Thanks.

Hey Ali,

How sure are you that the resonator is for whistle reduction? I ask because my (mis)understanding of how a resonator works leads me to believe that it shouldn't have much effect on a whistle noise. I know the idea that the resonator is for the whistle has been tossed around on this board a bunch, but does anyone really know that for sure?

Not trying to challenge you, just want to educate myself in my own battle against THE WHISTLE.

Resonator does a nice job of making the exhaust much quiter but the whistle reduction is a nice side effect. The whistle is still present with the resonator but barely audible under high acceleration (freeway on ramps for ex). The unit does look pretty simple inside, so perhaps another type of flat but small muffler may do the trick. I can't say that I buy the crushed exhaust pipe around the cross member concept being the cause of the whistle either. Folks who are installing louder type mufflers may not be able to hear the whistle! Just speculating.....!
